Fuel Filtration, Oil Filtration, Both?
Fuel Filtration, Oil Filtration, Both?
I’ve search quite thoroughly, but can’t seem to find what I am looking for. I’m thinking of adding an oil bypass (looking at the NUC Motorsports unit) as well as an additional fuel filtration system, but I have a bunch of questions.
First off, I drive mostly highway and change the oil every 5000 miles. I use the OEM oil filter and the Cummins recommended Valvoline Blue Oil. Logic tells me that anything that filters out particles smaller than those that my OEM filter is doing, is good for the engine and should be a mod I do soon (even though I have 150K on the OD). On the other hand, I have read (here and elsewhere) that this mod is only necessary if you are looking to extend the change intervals on the oil. It would be great if someone could point me to some science - articles or research done on the subject.
Same goes for the fuel filtration. I just recently threw in a Baldwin PF977 (supposed to be 5 micron). Call me negligent, but that was the first filter change since the dealer change one at around 20K. Prior to doing some research here, I had no idea that the filter could be lowering fuel pressure to dangerous levels. After installing my gauges, I had an idle pressure of around 6 psi. After putting in the new Baldwin, close to 10psi. Again, if I can put in a 2 micron filter, it is sure to increase the longevity of the high pressure pump and injectors, but can some of you point me to research?
Lastly, if I am to do these two mods, how can both be easily mounted in the engine bay. Most of the installs I have seen, both the oil and fuel filtration systems are mounted in the same location?
Oh, one more thing. If I do the fuel, can I continue to use the existing lift pump, or do I have to upgrade.
Thanks to all who respond. This site is full of useful information and some great members looking to help out the less informed.

If you do one thing add the fuel filtration!
These engines can give you 1 million miles on the standard oil filters but a little water and trash in the fuel will destroy the injectors which can destroy the engine itself.
Do a search for AH64ID, he has done a lot research and has posted good installation instructions.

I am a big fan of "better" filtration. Can't see any way it can hurt. Especially if you plan to keep the vehicle.
If you are good at plumbing, you can get the Amsoil filter adapter for about $35 for the bypass filter, (includes the orifice). Go to the hydraulic store and get your hose and fittings.

I'm going to be doing both in the (somewhat) near future. I've decided the Glacier Diesel Performance fuel filter kit designed for APPS motors will fit over the NUC Motorsports bypass oil filter kit. Nobody's been able to confirm it for me, so I figure over the next two paychecks I'll be the guinea pig and let everyone know how it shakes out. Worst case is that I've got to re-fab a bracket for the oil bypass assembly, and that doesn't scare me much...

If I read that right, you ran one fuel filter for 130k miles????
I just ordered the oil bypass filter kit from nucmotorsports. I wish I had done this a long time ago. Some people do it for extended change intervals and others just do it for better filtration. I will be doing it for both. I currently change the oil at 6k mile intervals. I will probably only go to 10k intervals now with oil analysis to verify.
My next mod will be a 2 micron fuel filter set up.
I am doing these mods mainly because I want to get a million miles from this truck and I have no plans on ever getting rid of it!!

I am waiting on NUK to call me and let me know the bypass filter is completed for the 2011 trucks. am in the process for fuel filtration as we speak. should be installing that next week if everything goes as planned. I only have a little over 2k miles on the new ride and want to make sure things are clean from the get go. will be doing oil samples regularly but still changing oil at the 5k mark. oil and filter is cheap. motor is nearly $17k installed for these new trucks

I called and talked to them. asked them to call me as soon as it was ready and I would order one. that was last week. Was told the 6.7 kits should be out within 3 weeks (of me talking to them).
Just so everyone is informed. If looking at installing a NUC Motorsports Kit on a 2003, you are going to have to come up with your own mounting bracket. They are currently for the 04.5+ only.
I mounted my NUC bypass behind the front bumper on the passenger side. Works GREAT there! My buddy has his mounted above the CP3 & he has to take it off when he works on the CP3, injectors etc... I can post some pics if you guys wants.
