5th gear nut?
5th gear nut?
my buddy has no 5th gear. its all turned up and runs like a scald *** ape. he hit 5th and gassed on it and just wasn't there. "he said anyways. what all could this be and what does the 5th gear nut fix kit consist of? i know how the tranny works cuz i rebuilt one. i guess it could be a stripped sline on the top or the bottom shaft, a bad ring, or the shifter fork could have fallen off the shaft that pushes it out, but which is most likely?? i think it has alredy had a nut fix kit put it in, but could the fix kit break also??? could it have shattered a gear? i guess i will have to pull the rear cover and see what it looks like.
why? everyone I know who pulls goosenecks has their 5th gear tack welded... just tack the nut to the gear. it'll never back off... and you don't have to tear down the tranny to swap shafts.
if you decide to tear it down, Piers has the best price on the shaft that I've seen.

ok, i figured out what happened. the snapring that holds the 5th gear synchro pack in place got bent somehow"i suspect when the last guy that had it apart stretched it out or something" and fell off so it let the synchro pack just slide on the shaft instead of engaging. it was mangled and stuck to the gear somehow when i pulled it apart. i had an extra snapring off an old nv-4500 i had. i see now how the 5th gear nut fix is. its a good design i think. but has anyone ever seen that snapring come off like that? or was it just carelesness of the last guy to fix it.? i saw that it was sealed up with clear house calk....??? it sealed it up, but it makes me think.. ya know? and there is no drain plug!!! f---in dodge. i filled it back up with 75-140 synthetic gear lube....?? is that the right stuff to put it in. total time to fix it, 2-1/2 hours. 35 bucks for lube and silicon. snapring, free. sweet sound of the cummins in 5th gear with the pyro buried, priceless
don't know if all of them are like this, but the '02 NV4500 I broke down recently had two snap rings on the 5th gear synchro shaft...
as for the drain plug, just remove the bottom bolt on the PTO cover... that's your drain.

they changed the 4500's up a little somewhere between there because even the top aluminum housing is different than the older ones. and did i put the right gear lube in there(75-140), i really don't want to burn up my buddie's tranny. i wonder if they changed the bottom shaft and put 2 rings just for that purpose. and if so, i wonder if it would be worth it to get the "updated" shaft?? probably not, but?? oh, and we smoked a 1200 hd sportster!! that was kewl! i can't wait to get my truck runnin. its just like forrest's truck, 94 striper, cummins 5-speed white, single cab. no cruise, tilt, power windows or locks, carpet... nothing!! it has a.c. and power steering...lol
not sure on the lube weight, but you want to run a high quality synthetic. I used the Castrol Syntorq that Dodge runs from the factory... it ain't cheap!
the 98+ trannies had a different top cover.
I love my stripper... wish I had a club cab, but that's the only thing I'd change... oh, and I wish it didn't have a peg leg rear... once the turbo comes on in 3rd, traction is an issue
