3rd gen. steering box swap.
It's absolutely a night and day difference from the 2nd gen. box. I couldn't be happier. It's tighter, more sensitive, and more responsive than it ever was. My brother has an '02 with 20K miles on it and this is much better. I'm enjoying driving my truck again and I'm able to relax when I'm on the freeway and actually able to look around instead of just concentrating on trying to stay in my lane. Lately, I wouldn't even let my wife drive my truck but now... no problem.
I almost have to learn how to drive my truck again 'cause it's soooo different. I don't know if the ratio is faster or not but I find my self running over curbs from turning too fast when cornering. It could be that it's absolutely effortless now to turn the wheel. One finger will turn the steering wheel as fast as I want. Plus... I used to have this annoying squeak in my steering column that has now disappeared. I'm very, very happy about that.
A few days ago, I drove my truck on a stretch of road that used to be down right scary in my truck. I was able to drive it with one hand on the steering wheel and one arm around my wife and was completely relaxed.
This guy (from a different board) has put together a very well thought out kit and would urge anyone who isn't satisfied with there steering to get in touch with him. Everything about the kit is a notch or two above the stock configuration and I'm very impressed.
I'm more than willing to let anyone take my truck for a spin if they're interested.

Well, the kit he put togeter comes with a newer versions 3rd gen. box, custom steering shaft, custom pitman arm, and a mounting bracket with all the hardware needed. It's a complete bolt on unit. He's in the process of making a new bracket so those of you that have the DSS can still use it.
This unit is not cheap but it's also not a band-aid for an inadequate box either. My truck is one of the test trucks and he's not real sure if there's any slight differences in the frame or anything from '94 to '02. This kit will be available soon once all the details get worked out.
