3rd gen pilot injection question
3rd gen pilot injection question
Mod, I apologize in advance if this belongs in the "general diesel discussion" board.

Pilot injection is toted as one of the reasons the new trucks are so quiet. So I A$$-ume if you turned off the pilot injection you could get the rattle back and have a 3rd gen truck that has that wonderful 2nd gen sound.

So, for those of you "in the know":

Would it be possible to have a "rattle mode" (turn of the pilot injection) with a box? It's all just timing and duration right? Could this be built into one of the new timing boxes? Will this increase the stress on the engine? If so, will the new block hold up?

Thanks in advance,
??? Tim (still learning) Way ???
Re:3rd gen pilot injection question
Stress will increase.

You could turn it off but a new complete map would need to be written. The second injection event is too late to work good. Retarded. Not you...the event

Re:3rd gen pilot injection question
Thanks Don!

Do you know if the new boxes use a new map or are they just playing tricks with the timing of the current map?

I have absolutely no use for this info other than it just interests the heck out of me....maybe it's not just the injection event that's "too late"...

Thanks again,
Tim

Re:3rd gen pilot injection question
I've sort of been wondering the same things. Could the Gen 2 computers be programmed to do a pilot injection? Would that help quiet them down if that were desired? If so, would that reduce the stress on the motor, thereby extending the life?
