31.6 MPG @ 5x5 What's not to love ???

I realize most everyone in here is into HP and amassing the most power available, and really dig BLACK smoke, but one of the by-products of all this power is excellent mileage.

This figure represents a stretch of 75 miles, from Camarillo, to Malibu (California, for those who have never heard of Malibu) and back. sea-level, and fairly flat terrain, and is also from the overhead. So don't worry, I'm not trying to get into any record books or anything. I'm just trying to show the other side of what is available with these trucks.
I averaged about 55 mph, and I did keep an egg between my foot and the skinny pedal. I sped up a bit as I approached the hills, and let off on the downhills. I bought my wife a Prius last year that gets about 50 MPG, and I have read a lot about ways to drive that increase mileage, and so I applied some of these techniques to the 3.5 ton CTD and was amazed at the results. I think the high settings on the juice actually increase the mileage a TON! Maybe 5x3 would have been better, I dunno...

I'm assuming you got that number from the overhead. Try hand calculating it. I'll be it's a lot lower than you'd expect.

Overhead calculates from throttle position with stock fueling. It does not see the extra fuel from boxes or injectors. Wishful thinking...

Yea, once I put on the Quad the overhead went to about 23/24 mpg! It is consistently 4 to 5 mpg off when hand calculating!! JB

The best I have achieved hand calc. is 32 miles/gal. That is on #2 and not getting much over 1600 rpm ( generally 1100 to 1500 rpm). I have done this on several tanks. But usually on the next tank I don't do as well. After all that ***** foot'n around I just gotta let out the tourqe.

I get this kind of mileage hand calculated if I forget to reset the trip odometer between fuelings
Don't kid yourself. A 7000 lbs, 6 liter diesel is not going to make 50 miles per gallon. 20 is about as good as one can realistically expect.

my whole tank hand calc'ed was 20.2, but that had about 1/2 of the miles towing the boat. I don't see why we shouldn't be able to get better mileage with better driving techniques. The hardest part is keeping the foot out of all that power...

Hand Calc is off a little too, who knows how full the pump stopped on the last fill up. The best way that I have figured out is to fill her up clear to where you can see it in the filler neck, then fill it up to the same level when you refuel. Speed and tire pressure/size make a huge difference. I get within 1/2 mpg pulling my tandem axle horse trailer empty vs full. Seems to me that the wind resistence does most of the harm with that trailer. My best empty mpg was 24, driving from Ogden UT through the Rockies to Spokane, WA at 65 mph, non stop 750 ish miles. My worst so far is 12.5 pulling my fully loaded tandem axle horse trailer over that same road at 80-85 MPH, racing Power Chokes up all the grades, and nearly boiling over at the top of Malad Summit about 6000' with a good 5 truck lengths on the Power Stroke Pulling similar load and my Comp on 2 with skinny pedal on the floor for 4-5 min. EGT guesses anyone??
