285s or 295s on stock Chrome Steel Wheels?

I have a 1997 Ram 2500 SLT Larime With every ssingle option, camper package, leather, ext cab, snow plow prep package, etc. However it has the factory Chrome 16in rims. How wide are these rims and what backspacing do they have? Will 295/75/16 Nittos fit on them without any issues with rubbing, etc?

I have a chance to get a really good deal on these tires. I know many people run similar sizes with the factory alloys but cant find much info about the steel rims.

If these tires wont fit, whats the largest that will? I am not going to lift the truck, and dont want to buy new wheels or spacers. I need something a little taller htan the 245/75/16 I have now as my 4.10 gears are killing mileage and also just look plain pathetic.

Thanks, Tim

I have 285 BFG ATs and no rubbing with or with out the 2" spacers on the stock crhome wheels so 295s should be no problem. I know of a few sets or 305s on the stockers but you gotta get the right tire shop for them I say grab them, you will love the way your truck looks

The stock chrome steel wheels are 6.5" wide. Wouldn't the wide tires be ballooned out like crazy on these narrow wheels? If so, then you'd be wearing down the center of your tire too much. To compensate, you'd have to run lower air pressure. Low air pressure on a ballooned out tire would drive pretty squirrely, don't you think?

I'm running 285s on my stock 1998 chrome rims for about 3000 miles now and no rubbing, or strange wear, yet anyway. They are Cooper Discoverys and they do great up here in the rain, and even in the mud driving up the long windy driveway and the occassional trip into the woods. Have yet to experience them on long trots into the great white stuff in the mountains.

Rotate and check psi every 10K Only Squirrely with the comp on kill

I have the Nitto's no probs. Ran them without the lift for a few days and no rubbing. You must rotate these tires, if you slip once the wear gets bad in a hurry. Awsome traction wet and dry, I am about to get a new set of them real soon. Not sure on the rim thing I have the 16x8 chromes.

Skinny rim and a wides tire make for a tucked in sidewall. better for sidewall tear protection, besides, seeing skinny tires on 12" wide rims, that looks pathetic

13FOX is running 315/70R16 Wild Country tires on the stock chrome rims. He has a lift on now, but said they would only rub marginally on the plastic inner fender at steering full lock. Wear looks good to me.
I'm running 255/85R16s on the stock chromes and have no rubbing at all. With the higher sidewalls you'll have to take care of correct inflation and the center will wear a little faster until you have reached a proper footprint again.
