14cm2 vs 16cm2

I was just told that a 16cm2 housing is what I need to cool my 12 valve back down. I just put a custom #10 plate in it in place of my #12 and the temps really went up when towing. Others have stated a 14cm2 housing would do the trick. Now I'm confused. I tow a lot of the time usually around 12000 lbs here in the mountains of WV. That makes a GCVWR of about 20000 lbs. I am planning on a 4" downpipe but I really need to decide on either changing the housing or replacing the turbo. Any ideas???????

You may want to start by sliding the plate back a bit at a time to control the temps. Also, what do you have your timing set at? If you haven't advanced it from stock this would also help quite a bit before swapping out turbos. Just some thoughts.

You do not list a tranny type? I would be very hesitant to put a 16 cm2 housing on any turbo ...for an automatic.

It depends upon how I drive it. If I really get on it, no. I don't tow anything so can't comment about that. I do snow plow some long uphills and it keeps it in check. I did one truck pull last year and it pegged at 1500. For daily driving it does great and spools very fast. Where do you have your timing and plate set at?

well I'm back to a stock HX35 w/a banks 14cm quickspool housing & wastegate & I really like the setup for towing, I priced my hybrid to a buddy & he bought the thing, so I went to the full B1 & it is just not tow friendly, way bad manners when loaded, so I said what the heck, I took the 35+banks housing in on trade for my hybrid, (I had sold him the 35 w/the housing awhile back) since it was laying here I figured I'd stick it on & see how horrible it was, much to my surprise (also might add I swapped him my custom #100 plate I had made, for my old TST #10 back, I had also sold him) it really doesn't run bad at all, I slid the #10 back about 1/8th of an inch & my starwheel is spun back a bit & the smoke & egt's are awesome as compared to before, I can actually lay into the go pedal w/out stopping traffic , my main reason for the de-tune was that summer is about here & the truck will be hooked to numerous trailers pretty much all the time between moving equipment/hay around & then rodeo/roping season is about to hit, & with the outrageous fuel prices a man has to save every chance he gets, so for the $ I'd say the 14 w/gated would be the way to go, I also still have an extra hybrid layin around here if ya decide to go with a bigger turbo all together, PM me if ya wanna give it a shot!! I've ran both the 16cm,non-gated & the 14 w/gated housings & I'd go for the 14 gated if the pocketbook can stand it!! give me a shout, L8er, Dusty
