I was wondering which trck would be the best to go with 1997 long bed 5 speed or 98 24v 5 speed If i got the 24valve i would want a p-pump cause of past prob with my old truck or some advice on what i could to with the vp44

 

no question i would go with the 12 valve '97...5 speed...thats pretty much the perfect truck there ....i like the rattle of the 24 valve but im scared of the vp44

 

Between those options, definately the 12V. A 98.5 24V would probably have a 53 block . And changing the 24V to a p-pump costs lots of money and is a pain in the........well, you get the idea.

 

It's not that expensive and really not that complicated either...I did mine for about 1600 and took me 2 days. and guess what the 98 12v that I bought to get the parts off of HAD A 53 BLOCK. It's not just a 24v thing.... its a cummins 97-01 thing

yep my 98 12 valve has a 53 block too, but from what i read, only the 24 valves have problems with it!

I didnt make that clear the 12v that I bought had a 53 CRACKED block.

If it doesnt have the 53 block then I would definitley go with a p-pumped 24v. I truely think that a greater hp can be achieved with this combo rather than a 12v, just for the simple fact that you have twice the valves so you can let that much more are in and exhaust out. just my .02

 

I would run a 12v or a p-pump 24v. If you go the VP route your gonna need the ECM and all the electronics sensors. A P-pump engine is so much easier installation with a stick truck.

 

I just put a new lift pump and vp-44 in my 2000 24v 5-speed, they put the lift pump in the fuel tank...said that should take care of any problems...we'll see

 

I hate to tell you but that didn't take care of anything, the vp is still a time bomb waiting to go off

 

oh well, its under warranty. 2 different dealers told me this, one I go to church with so I hope they wouldnt steer me wrong.
