I paid my W250 "stupid" fee today... how about you ?
Yesterday, I installed new springs and cups on my upper king pins. Glad I did.
Today, after about an hour of driving around, I noticed that a strange noise was coming out from my front drivers side tire. Started out as a squeal, and quickly graduated to a mean and nasty growl. Finally as I approached a traffic signal on a highway here, when I hit the brakes, the truck growled and grinded and the steering wheel make a sharp jerk, and I pulled over.
I called AAA and had them pick me and the beast up. With that, I get home, unload the truck and drive it up in my driveway, and park it. I go inside change clothes, and immediately begin to take the truck apart.
Well, I get the caliper off, and i don't see anything unusual. I'm dead nuts in belief that my wheel bearing was seizing up, and that's where I was heading. I kept spinning the rotor and feeling nothing unusual. No growl, no grinding, no nada, except the standard freeplay in that I set in the bearing 6 months ago. Can't understand what was happening, so I get all my tools out to remove the rotor.
WIth that, I spin the rotor one more time, and wallah ! This falls to the ground.

It appears that one of the extra nuts I was using yesterday to "double nut" the studs to replace my king pin bushing had fallen into the area behind the caliper and stuck there. I guess it was being ground up as the rotor spun, but finally got caught.
So... Again, I paid my "Stupid" fee. Is there ever going to be a time I get a refund ?

Seems like every time I work on the truck, I pay the fee.
This last time I was paying for the PO stupid deposit. Aluminum wheels and my 200ft lbs cordless impact couldn't get the lug nuts off.
I ended up using a Craftman 1/2" drive ratchet and a 4ft long cheater pipe to get them loose. A 2ft pipe didn't work. I sheared the threads on 1 lug nut.
I am getting new studs and nuts next week.

Once I got the 3 rocks out from behind the rotors, it was just fine. Took all of about 20 minutes.
So I guess I got your refund.

I financed my "stupid" fee and got a low interest rate but the balance doesn't seem to be going down. I should have taken out the optional insurance that covers me in case of sudden attacks of "extra stupid".
The longer I'm around cars and trucks the less "stupid fees" seem to pop up. Now it's just paranoia or that seems like a good idea fees most of the time.
And time for a shameless plug. Remember to help keep Auto shop and other CTE programs alive to give future generations a tuition free opportunity to learn skills they might not get otherwise whenever you can.

My wallet,
as I tipped the AAA guy for being "Extra careful" with my beast. He was a little paranoid that the weight of the truck would cause it to lurch forwards, so he strapped the truck down from every corner. Good fella, indeed.
I need to call my insurance carrier, and get this extra coverage. Seems to be what I was looking for.
