windows xp lost password
windows xp lost password
I think a virus caused this problem but a few mornings ago when I started my computer, a window opened up I have never seen before. It said click"here" to close "family office" which I don't know what is. When I did it brought up the sign off box, the one that says shutdown, standby or restart. It will shutdown and restart. It would do nothing else unless I hit ctrl, alt del which brings up the windows log on screen for the username and password. I bought the computer used about a year ago and have been using it ever since but I don't have a clue what the password is because it never ask me for it before.(it was saved). I dont have the disc either. Anyone have any idea what to do? I cant get into windows, safemode or anything. I am on a rental computer right now until I get mine fixed.(Ihope)
The same thing happened to a friend's PC 5 months ago. We just ran the latest Norton virus utility on his hard drive.
After scanning his hard drive the "spybot" (I think that's the name) worm came up. The Norton utility quarantined it and everything is back to normal. Make sure you're running the latest Norton program to scan your HD. We tried older ones but they didn't seem to work.
Good luck. I hope this works for you.

I'm gonna try the administrator when I hook it back up. I hope that will work. I'm pretty sure a virus caused it. I use AGV and it usually works. I guess "usually" is the keyword here. Right now I'm gonna get my money's worth out of this rental! I was about to have DTR DT's without my puter!
When you first boot up keep punching the 'delete' button. That will bring you into the set-up mode. If there is not a password to change your password (you wii see what I mean), you can get rid of the password yourself. If there is a password to protect the password, I don't know what to tell you.

If you do need a password maybe you could search the internet for a password detection utility. A friend of mine found one (only for Win 2000 though) that you put on a bootable floppy disk and start the computer with - it then runs a UNIX program that will tell you the administrator password for the computer. I have no idea where he got it but you could TRY to find the same thing for XP.
Oh yea, it was free - gotta love the internet!!

I use this on work machines that aren't on a domain and the password is lost. It works best when you reset the admin password to anything but blank.

in windows xp, if you are locked out because of a password at login, there is no quick way around it. Microsoft tells you to rebuild the O/S - linux has a couple of password crackers to get you by it -- if you are tech savy you can download them onto a friends machine and make a boot CD to remove the password,
I have reset at least 20 passwords in the last 6mo. at my work as a Tech at a private computer shop.
