Windows help
Re:Windows help
I have professionally supported every Microsoft O/S except for ME. For those of you who like Win2K Pro, I think you would really like XP Pro - NOT to be confused with XP Home Edition. They look a lot alike, but the kernels are significantly different.
XP Pro is a very stable O/S - even better than 2000. I ran 2000 for two years before I started beta testing XP Pro for Microsoft. That was 2 1/2 years ago. I haven't run anything else since.
By the way, virtually no machine from 1998 will support 2000 Pro without at least adding memory. Anything less than 128MB is insufficient for 2000.

Remove XP and install Win 2K Pro......

Just increase it's size manually by clicking the box on the right top corner, next time it should open full size.

Some more information might help. What type of new window? Browser, Microsoft Word, some other program? Normally you can size them by dragging the corner (watch the cursor change). Some browser windows are fixed in size, though, and there's no way to change them.

Re:Windows help
Browser window. When I get email for example and I click on the link the new window opens up to display that link but is really small. XP seems to do wierd things after an update. Computer runs slow for a while and then it seems to get back up to speed. I was just wondering if there was a preference somewhere that I could click on to get a full size browser window when it opens. Thanks

What size is the browser window when you open it normally, by double-clicking the icon for the browser program? Sometimes windows open back up to the last size they were closed at. That's about the only thing I can think of without sitting down and watching what's happening.

Re:Windows help
If I reboot the 'puter or start it up and click IE they come up full. If I wanna open another one, they come up 2x2. I tried stretching them, defrag, sacrificing a virgin, killed a chicken but they still do this. I hate XP.
Re:Windows help
Try this, I've found it works on Win2K.
(usually after a pop up window pops up, any new windows I open will open up to that pop up's size)
Start IE.
Right click on a link and "open in new window".
New window opens up tiny, stretch it to the size you want your "new windows" to open up as.
Close the original window.
Close this new window.
Restart IE and test.
Sometimes I have to open a new window, then open another new window from that window, then do the resizing thing, just make sure to shut the newly sized window last.
Also, sometimes I have to do the above steps a number of times before IE understands that I really do want the new windows to open up bigger, I guess it's a slow learner.
Good Luck.

Remember, these are computers. The sacrifices are supposed to be mice, not chickens.

Phox gave you pretty good suggestions for a routine to try, I think. It's mostly just a matter of making it remember the size you want. Thing is, as you've found, sometimes it just goes back to doing the wrong thing.

Re:Windows help
To control the size of primary and secondary IE windows, start by closing all IE windows. Then launch IE, right-click on any link, and choose Open in New Window. Size the secondary window the way you want all such windows to be. Now close it by clicking on the X icon at the top-right corner while holding down the Shift key. Repeat this for the primary window that remains. You may have to repeat the process from time to time.
The differences you are seeing have nothing to do with running Windows XP. They are becuase you have a newer version of IE. These settings used to be less easily changed in earlier versions of IE. They also are impacted by the extremely high use of Javescript to autosize windows.
There is no way to make these Windows settings totally permanent. HTML authors can use javascript:resizeTo and moveTo commands to tell the new window what size and position on the screen to open at. This will override the default IE settings. It is also possible for them to confuse the default IE settings. That is why it may be necessary to repeat the process in the future.
Don't forget, anytime you go to a website, you are voluntarily running the site owner's code on your PC. That code may be very well or very poorly written. While the browser vendor tries to keep the website's code from corrupting Windows, all code is only as perfect as the humans who wrote it - be it the pros or ametuers.
Hope this helps.
