Who shoots an Ultra Mag?

I bought a used Rem. Sendero chambered in .300 Rem. Short Action Ultra Mag. Anyone shoot this cartridge? I don't know much about short actions, I guess if it performs well it'll be fine. The RUM's are supposed to be bad calibers, I shoot a 7mm STW as my main deer rifle now but it never hurts to have another big rifle. What kind of ranges can you expect with it, I'm figuring it ought to do 400 to 450 with no problems. Also thinking about losing the factory stock and finding some type of thumbhole/target stock for it. Like the browning eclipse rifles have.

I shoot a sendero in .300 RUM and a model 7 in 30 SAUM-----I wasn't aware that they had a sendero in the short action ultra mag------either way they're both great calibers. As far a range goes, it has to do with what bullet and load you're shooting and what kinda critter you're shooting at.--Matt

I shoot a .300 RUM. I love it so far. I've only killed two elk with it with two shots though. The first was at 403 yards and the second was 230 yards. I haven't even gone through enough brass to reload anything yet. I need to spend more time with it though.

How's the recoil? I haven't shot it yet, I imagine she's kinda stout. The guy who sold it is supposed to have some good loads worked up for it, I might be able to get the recipes from him. I'll probably go with the lightest bullet it will group with, maybe 150's or 168's, want to get a lot of velocity out of it for longer ranges. We'll see how it stacks up to the STW. I'm shooting 140's out of it, around 3200 fps. If I can get that speed out of a bigger heavier bullet, you can really lay the smack down on deer pretty far out there. It may even group well at like 700 yards, with good ammo. I'll have to fool with it a bunch and see what it'll really do. Looking forward to it.

My dad and grandpa both shoot 300 Weatherby Ultra Mags they kick like a mule couple times i have seen my take it in the eye and get a black eye from looking to close to the scope to get the sun out of his eyes my grandpa not being as stout as he used to takes a bag of lead shot from his shot gun reloading stuff and puts it between his shoulder and his rifle to take the punch out of it

Gaily bedight, A gallant knight, In sunshine and in shadow Had journeyed long, Singing a song, In search of Eldorado But he grew old— This knight so bold— And o’er his heart a shadow Fell as he found No spot of ground That looked like Eldorado And, as his strength Failed him at length, He met a pilgrim shadow—“Shadow,” said he, “Where can it be— This land of Eldorado?” “Over the Mountains Of the Moon, Down the Valley of the Shadow, Ride, boldly ride,” The shade replied, “If you seek for Eldorado!”

Do you mean "Weatherby Mag", or "Weatherby Ultra Mag" cause I am not aware of a weatherby "ultra mag"

The weatherby mag is a good cartridge, the one I'm talking about is Remington's newer UltraMag. The Ultra Mark is the model of weatherby rifle listed in the link. I bought the sendero without knowing a whole lot about it, and I'm glad I did. I looked it up briefly on the web last night, one of the loads listed in a manual listed velocities just over 3500 fps with 150 grain bullets, and the high 3200 range with 180's. Holy freakin' smokes. I didn't realize it would do that. The new deer buster extrordinare has just made it's appearance. I was running around the room and waving my arms when I read that, this should be awesome.

Did you guys look at the Scirroco 150's at nearly 4000 fps for the .300 RUM?

This gets better all the time. The gun is starting to throb, just leaning in the corner. I can't wait to get some loads worked up for it. 4000 FPS?! I gotta go lie down for a while, I just can't take this excitement.

Is this rifle a RUM (Rem. Ultra Mag) or a SAUM (Short Action Ultra Mag)? Cause I'm thouroughly confused now

It is the short action ultra mag. Please don't tell me it won't perform like the long action!

they're both GREAT calibers, but you do lose about 250 fps with the saum versus the rum. The RUM is also a little flatter shooting at longer ranges like about 15 inches less drop at 500 yds and the energy of course drops also at that kinda range like around 1880 ft lbs for the saum and 2300 ft lbs for the RUM. (these numbers should be about ball park using a 150 grain bullet) Then you get into the whole ballistic coeficient thing. (thats a whole nother story) I myself like the concept of the SAUM, a short fat cartridge is what the benchrest shooters have been using and wildcatting for years. In theory you get a more consistent burn and consistency is what wins matches. Any way hope you enjoy your new rifle and keep us posted-Matt
