Who has the inside scoop on leather furniture

Talk about being a duck out of water. We've been shopping for a leather couch for the past few days. Our house is a modest in the woods kind of country home with lots of western stuff. We're shopping for a couch with nail head trim, no seams on the cushings in a nice medium brown. I've found stuff that looks good from $700 to $2400.

That's a big spread in my book for items that on the surface look much the same. I know the difference (per the sales people in the highend stores) is in the quality of the leather, is it all leather and of course the wood underneath. But what's the real deal. I would guess that markup is in the 100% range, does that account for much of the difference? Some low overhead dealers willing to make less profit per unit.

And what about buying direct from the manufacture? Mississippi has a lot of funiture factories and that's a neighboring state. To save $1000 or so, I'd drive 500 miles. Of course they may not sell direct to the public.

Thanks for any guidance. RJR

Head to Springfield, Mo. They have several, quality furniture distributers located just off the freeway.

Go heavy duty with the leather and stitching ... and at what is under the cushions. Some models are really skimpy on material under there and that may lead to support springs popping thru your leather cushions.

We just bought a leather couch. We were looking at couches and found one we liked. Asked if we could get it in leather they said sure no problem it does come in leather but there will be a fabric upgrade charge. Turned out to be a 1500.00 upgrade. Took the couch from 1200.00 to 2700.00. (we knew the leather would be more expensive as we had looked at other leather couches and the 2700 was in the ballpark of what we had seen, but didnt imagine it would be a 1500.00 upgrade until then). While the wife and I sat there and were thinking about it we just happen to sit on a nearby couch in the showroom that was leather and noticed the price tag. It was only 1500.00. I stood up and realized that it looked exactly the same as the one we wanted to buy. Turns out it was a bit different the back was 1.5 inches shorter. Other than that it looked and felt the same. I asked the salesperson about the price difference. He told me it came with the exact same warranty and the leather was of the exact same quality, the subframe and everything alse was the same as the original one we looked at. If I were to use that leather on the original couch it would have cost the same 2700.00. He said the difference in price was due to the fact that they make that couch in much larger quantities and was only available in two colors of leather a light one and a dark one, no other fabric choices. We were wanting a dark one as we had already picked out the color. This was a bit darker than we originally chose but it was even better because it was darker. We opted to save the 1200.00.

From the title of this thread and remembering your other thread about the problems with your commode not "voiding all the contents" I wondered if the two threads were related (thought you might be looking for a leather throne).

I would second the vote for heavy duty. I have set on some couchs with the nail head trim and you could pull the nails out with zero effort. It was as if they were pounded into the foam and nothing else. I would definitely check out the nail heads and how they are attached.

1200, one hundred bills, that is out of my price range (rebal, just kidding., it's just that's something like I'd type).

And Rob, not related, but man if they were that would be a real mess if a commode failure required buying a new couch. But,on the otherhand the idea of a leather commode is intriguing.
