A "what's interesting about your job" thread
My current job, not too much to write about. In my history, I used to manually climb radio towers. Tallest tower climbed was over five hundred feet. Just me, a climb harness and some steel shank boots. Unfortunately, there have been a large amount of deaths related to climbing radio towers.
I had the same gig when I was much younger. We did tower construction and maintenance. We did a six tower array for the local college which is still there after 22 years. I get to show that one to my kids. We did MCI tower maintenance in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. My tallest tower was also 500 ft. We showed up for maintenance and while they were taking care of that I shimmied up the tower and stood on top (well from my waist up was above the top). Couldnt bring myself to actually stand on the top. It was only a 4ft face. We also did a 1600 footer but they would not let me on that one. It had an elevator. My best friend and I were on an MCI tower one day (300ft) doing paint. I was white, he was red. I'm at the top, he's on the section below me on the opposite face. I heard a strange noise and then "ooomph" and the tower shook a little. The latch on his safety belt had gotten gummed with paint and did not latch closed. When he swung around the tower his belt came unlatched and down he went. By the Grace of God he landed perpendicular on a star guide wire about 10 feet below him. He was over 275 feet up. That was the last day we ever worked on towers. I have more stories.
Accounts Receivable isn't that interesting, but what is interesting is what my company has the capability of doing.
We are an ISP for about 20 building in Downtown Los Angeles. With the Optic equipment we have been setting up, we are able to offer internet with download speeds of up to 100MB. Now, no one has actually ordered it yet, but we have tested and received about 98MB currently. I'd like to see AT&T or Time Warner attempt to top that.

hmm, job is not that interesting at all really, 2 things that make it interesting:
~spending as much time in here as I do (as has been said already)
~trying to figure out where to go work next, hopefully within a few months.
anybody know of any good job openings around northern NJ?

Walkin' and kickin'. I'm the gas man, one of those guys spins two bottles at once and makes it look easy.
I get to see all sorts of neat fab work in progress, wander around in all kinds of interesting manufacturing plants, and hit on pretty girls in flower shops.
This is what I drive:

im a electrical lineman for AEP here in kentucky. I climb 40-60 foot poles pretty much everyday on 1/8" pieces of metal. The stupidest thing i've ever done but absolutely awesome. Oh yeah there's 19,900 volts up there too.
Not much fun here, starting a new commute daily of a couple hundred miles 5 days a week. Even get to put up with revolving shifts.
Might be better money just resigning and saving the fuel money.

My job is a lot of fun. I am a member of a technical support engineering team for a company that makes airbag inflators. My team is responsible for the equipment that loads the pyrotechnic (gas generant) material that burns and creates the gas that fills the airbags in automobiles. My main responsibility is in the design and improvement of the production equipment. I get to work with state of the art high tech equipment and come up with solutions to problems with the production equipment. At the end of the day, there is a great sense of satisfaction in making a device that helps to save thousands of lives everyday.
One of the most exciting things about my job is when testing of the pyrotechnic material is required. There is just something fun about playing with things that go BOOM! I get to occasionally play with things like sodium azide, RDC, MIP, UIX, and yes even IMR (gunpowder).

My job is fun to me. I get called to do an epidural for a woman screaming in pain, probably the worst she has ever felt. I get to interact with the mom and pop to be, and do the epidural, and 20 minutes later she says to me "I love you". Sometime they even say it as I walk in door and have never met them. They just know I am going to get rid of the pain. I am also a hypnotist and sometimes if they want to (Mom AND Dad) I will help Mom "relax" by hypnotizing her. Really cool, and a lot of job satisfaction from helping and interacting with, and meeting new people. Still enjoy being by myself with my mules and donkeys too. Had a new donkey foal yesterday when I went to the barn. Looks like God has been good to us all.
