Washington, DC declares crime emergency..

http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/07/12/D8IQH9P05.html

Two groups of tourists were robbed at gunpoint on the National Mall, just hours after the police chief declared a crime emergency in the city in response to a string of violence that included the killing of a British activist.

The activist, Alan Senitt, was attacked in the Georgetown area on Sunday, his throat was slit and police say the attackers attempted to rape his companion. It was the 13th homicide in the city this month. Robberies are up 14 percent, and armed assaults have jumped 18 percent in the past 30 days.

On Wednesday, U.S. Park Police were looking for connections between the latest Mall robberies and three similar incidents in the area in late May. There have been no arrests in any of those cases.

On Tuesday night, two women from Texas were robbed at gunpoint by two men dressed in all black, said U.S. Park Police Sgt. Scott Fear. About 15 minutes later, a family of four from Missouri was robbed by suspects with the same description, he said.

Though no one was injured, Fear said there were similarities to three violent attacks on the National Mall in May. In one case, a 17-year- old woman was sexually assaulted.

"We try to prevent this from happening," Fear said. "We're going to reallocate our resources. We're going to see what improvements we can make."

District of Columbia Police Chief Charles Ramsey declared a crime emergency in the city after Senitt, a volunteer for the potential presidential campaign of former Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner, was killed.

The crime emergency declaration allows commanders more flexibility to adjust officers' schedules and reassign them to high-crime areas.

The tourist-friendly National Mall, which is under the jurisdiction of Park Police rather than D.C. police, is usually considered safe. But the recent crimes against tourists have raised calls for a larger police presence. Police are asking Mall visitors to "be our eyes and ears," Fear said. "We're going to ask them to be vigilant."

Curious-- what is the policy in D.C. on firearms? I suspect that gun control is big there.... based only on this news story, anyway....

It is sad to me that our capital has the worst crime in the country.

Crime in DC? Ya don't say. It's hot in Baltimore this time of year too. I've been down there twice this month during the day, waaaaaay too many people on the side streets and alleys for me to be comfortable. Can't get out of there fast enough when I have to go....

Thing is, you can't ask city folks to be vigilant, 99% of the time they just wont do it. Too much urban pride I guess, them against the "man". Here in Maryland they even have a "stop snitching" DVD you used to be able to get that gives examples of what happens (ed) to cooperators. The main guys in the video are some kind of drug dealers with $20,000 watches, nickel plated guns and high dollar cars. Making it all glamorous and all for the 8 and 10 year olds in the city to look up to.

The whole thing is a joke. We need stiffer penalties, simple as that. There shouldn't be 4 foot long wrap sheets.

DC gun laws here:
http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/StateLaws.aspx?ST=DC

In short:
Pretty much all firearms are illegal in DC.
Transporting firearms through the District is considered illegal.
Even transporting ammunition is illegal.
The firearms you are allowed to posess must be kept disassembled in your house.
BTW, that semi-auto .22 rifle with the 18 round tube-fed magazine you have in the closet is considered a machine gun in Washington DC.

Worse than anywhere if I read it correctly, MD is one of the really silly ones, I think DC in the top 3 toughest.

Not allowed to carry inside Baltimore City limits either. They take thousands of illegal guns off the streets every year, doesn't seem to make a difference.
Approx. 300 murders a year and tens of thousands of assualts.....

Side note, the laws on Handguns only really matter and pertain to law abiding citizens. They have absolutely zero impact on the guy who bought his for $150.00 and an 8 ball from his nephew who stole it from their neighbor.

Hohn - You are exactly correct. D.C. has some of the most restrictive gun control laws in the country, yet still has some of the highest crime rates in the country. Without rechecking the facts, I think that it is pretty much impossible to own a pistol there. I just don't think the "powers that be" in D.C. get it. Armed citizens are safe citizens. Oh well, ignoring the politics of the issue (this isn't the place), I hope they get things under control. It makes our country look bad when our nations capital becomes the cesspool of criminals.
