Vista?????
Vista?????
How do I make it move faster? I just bought the new lap top and Vista is not on my good list. I have the home basic version. It just takes so long to perform actions like closing a window or anything. It seems like it has way too many programs running for start up. Any of you that can help me please do cause I am just short of throwing this thing out the window of the truck at about 90 provided my DW doesnt kick in and cause me to slow down!
What are the specs on the new laptop? If it is a Celeron-M (of Sempron) with only 512MB of RAM, I would recommend more memory. I ran 2 almost identically spec'd new laptop with XP and then another (same brand and a little faster processor, both 512MB ram) with Vista. It does well with basic internet and office apps with XP, but with Vista it was terrible.
It is only 512MB so I guess a memory upgrade is already in order? I will go on up as high as possible if needed but what do you guys think? can I get buy woth another 512 or will I need to go to the limit?

Yes, it is a Celeron Processor. Its expandable to 2.0G so now I need to know where is the best source for this? I know there are a million online stores that deal with nothing but this so who do you guys use and what can I expect to pay?
Im no computer expert, but a Celeron processor is questionable, especially with resource hungry Vista.
For the memory, I would try www.tigerdirect.com
Then you could take it to where you bought it and have them install the momery if you are not comfortable doing it (this should also save your warranty on the laptop).

512 is good for a 2000 model machine. It ought to be against the law to sell a machine with less than 2gb now days.
But it's not Vista's fault that these systems are baselined out with anything less than a gig.

FYI DO NOT keep any personal info on that machine...
I work with the post office ...THE US GOVernment
will NOT allow VISTA IN ANY GOV SYSTEM...
it IS that dangerous to security
As far as installing it, I assume its just like my old toshiba and just a matter of removing a cover from the bottom and slipping the memory into a slot?
After that last scare/ post, I think I just need to figure out how to remove vista and install XP. Any tips or guidence on how to do that?

The older Celerons were junk. The new ones (labeled Celeron-D or Celeron-M) are good for basic use (internet, Office, email, etc), I would bump it up to at least 1GB, but if you can get 2GB at a good price, go that route. Vista is very memory hungry. For reference, XP has a minimum of 128MB and Vista is 512. XP runs very poor on 128, but ok on 256 (double minimum). So I would say at least 1GB. One thing to look at it if you have 2-256MB modules or 1-512MB. If you have the 1-512, you could add 1-1GB and have 1.5GB total. If you have 2-256, you will have to get rid of 1 of them to put the new in.
