Vista?????
The security seems great to me. It makes sure you want to do something every time you want to do something. I like the feature myself. I will let you know how it turns out. I am going to go up to 2.0GB and see how that works for me. If not, XP it is
You will probably find the RAM upgrade to take care of your needs (I am assuming since you have a Celeron notebook that you are not a hardcore gamer, no offense intended, just labeling your primary use). One issue that may come up with going back to XP is driver support, most of the hardware on your notebook will probably still work, but double check first. Also, many newer PCs have SATA (serial ata as opposed to parallel ata in older models) and XP needs a driver to load onto it. Good luck.
Thanks everyone for the guidance. I am not a hard core gamer either and i dont take offence at all to that. I never understood those guys. I use my lap top to surf the net and thats really about it. I will install the 2.0G memory and go from there. I bet that will take care of this issue, at least I hope it will! Thanks guys.
I recently bought a new Toshiba with 2 Gb of ram and Vista loaded on it. It seems to run OK. Vista has some issues with Office 2000 products, though. If I had a copy of XP Pro I'd be loading it up.
Office 2000 is 8+ years old. It ended mainstream support in 2004. It cannot be blamed for being 8 years old.
Why do folks hate Microsoft so much. I guess its a fear of the unknown.
They still have better than 75% market share. So we couldn't do what we do without their innovation.

It's really no different in buying a car or TRUCK. Many people shy away from the new engine and model year changes. They certainly have a history of having to work bugs out. But they do it and they really want to do what's right.
I heard some folks complain about the prices too. Most everything they have for a consumer is under 200 bucks for the big products. and free when we buy a new system!!! How much better pricing can we have.

I guess I’m the only one that kind of likes Vista. I just bought a new HP laptop with Vista Home Premium and so far I like it. Like any new operating system it takes a while to work the bugs out but so far it has been very stable. That said I don’t use IE and only use FireFox so spyware isn’t so much an issue. My laptop has over 1 gig of ram so slow down doesn’t seem to be a problem with mine.

Bill is in business. He competes with competitors and also with what people want. You make money on your job I suspect.
Everyone wants it faster and more productivity, be it games or web surfing. No one is forced to upgrade to anything. If you like Me! or Windows 3.11 that's up to you. But your hardware won't last. That's not Bill's fault.
The owner of the Golden State Warriors has enough money but is he supposed to shutdown his basketball team?
Windows Desktop programs are virtually free to you. Given to you on a $350 Dell. Just think, back in the day we couldn't have been here meeting people all over the world with lightning speed. What we have is because of innovation and making dreams actually come true.
Yes I am very biased. I worked there for several years. And I thank Bill for my being able to retire.
You have alternatives. Why didn't you buy a Mac or Linux or something? Because you already bought the best products out there.
2+ years of development and you can't put every single feature into the build.
Computers don't cost $359 or even $999. Those are toys for kids to do homework on. If you want a machine that doesn't have to reboot for a year then I can do that. But if you spend $700 then you have to expect it to be a work in progress.

WOW. That last post was strait and to the point!
I like the Vista OS so far. It seems the same as XP only more bubbly if that makes sense? As far as not having to upgrade? My upgrade was due to my old lap top being physicaly worn out. The screen wouldnt hold itself up, the touch pad had a hole in it. Heck even the case had a hole where my hand rested.
Im not blaming anyone. Espeacially since it appears to be a hard ware issue on my end. I do question why Microsoft has to make an OS that requires so much memory?

And I don't think you have any security issues to worry about with Vista. (With the possible exception of pirated software installed, but know one does that. Right?
Maybe I'm biased too. I was one of the poor saps that bought Windows ME. I'm hoping Vista doesn't end up with the same track record.
I didn't buy a Mac because I've been working with DOS, Unix, and Windows machines for aver 20 years. Virtually every new laptop you can purchase comes with Vista preinstalled. So far I've only had one shutdown crash with Vista. It makes me a bit worried though because I've only had the computer for a month. I've yet to meet an IT professional willing to switch their networks to Vista.
I'm happy for you that Bill Gates made it possible for you to retire. I want to retire too. Maybe I'll have to send Bill my resume.

You have some time on me. I only have 14 years in the industry, 7 of those were with Microsoft!
But you will know that an IT guy doesn't switch to Vista, vista is a desktop OS. IT pro's are running 2003 Server, that's apples and cantaloupes.
But there are a number of companies that rolled vista to their client machines as part of the early adopter program. and now many that are planning to make the switch later this year. It's far different for a home user and an enterprise infrastructure. They test, plan and test some more. and then they put at least a gig in a desktop. When you're running DreamWeaver and Office with Visio and then Clarify you have to have memory to do it.
They don't buy 4 dells and then 2 HP's. they have a plan and a relationship with their vendors to buy hundred's and thousands of machines spec'd out to handle Vista.
This is my web server. 4way Opteron dual core and 16Gb RAM. I reboot it once a year.

I just bought my daughter a Dell laptop for college it was an Inspiron 6400 Dual Core T2350 (1.86GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB), with Windows Vista, I haven't played with it much but the playing I've done I'm happy with it so far a lot of cool features.
