VA/Vet question
VA/Vet question
I'm a Navy vet and have used the VA for a home loan but now we are getting ready to build and I'm told that Lowes gives a 10% discount to vets. They said a VA card will verify eligiblitly but I don't have one. How can I get one or prove to Lowes I'm a vet besides taking my DD214 with me everytime?
If you are near a VA hopital or branch. Bring your DD214 and your award letter of service connected disability (if you have one) and ask for an ID. They should take your picture and send it to you in the mail.
I dont see why not. Ultimately it would be best to go back through your med records, find something you went to medical for...ie knees, lower back, sprained ankle, ringing in the ears(tinitis). Make a claim and recieve a percentage rating. even if they give you a rating of 0% you are locked in for life.
But if you have nothing to make a claim about, still pursue an ID.

to get a VA card you will either need to be disabled (10% or more OR service connected ZERO percent) or fully retired. an employee is doing this right now and she waited too long so has to go thru the whole rigamarole to get an ID.
As food for thought if you are eligible to join either the vfw or american legion the ID card you get from them might work......I've talked the cashier at the lowe's here into accepting my vfw card a time or 2 without a whole lot of trouble.
I never thought about the VFW. I don't qualify for any disablities and have good ins. so I really don't need the VA's services (except the home loan). All I want is a 10% discount from Lowes.

I've just used my retired ID card that has the "Indefinite" expiration date. Works every time. You could ask Lowes if they accept that as proof.
I have a 10% disability and don't have an ID card from the VA. I use Tricare as my insurance so I thought that was all I needed to do. Do I need to pursue a VA card?

If you are eligible for VA medical, you should get signed up. Be ready in case you need it or your insurance fails or something.
When you do set it up you will be issued a card. And no disability is required, just service during the appropriate times or places.
This is the first time I've heard of the Lowe's discount. Hmmm, i'll give it a try with my card and see what happens.

Cool, I'll check it out. I'm just barely a Vet because I signed up reserve and got recalled for Desert Storm and stayed active for 8mths...just enough to get Vet status. I don't have any medical issues...I just want the darn discount.
