I prefer the sound of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine in the Spitfire and P-51 Mustangs.

I think I would be a little scared to fly in that thing. Why was it smoking like that? To much fuel and not enough air?

Although that may of sounded good here is something that will make your ears bleed(*make sure you don't have your speakers cranked up*).

Straight Cut Sequential Gearbox.

*Edit* Is that your plane?

Byron, We have a few old Deere tractors on the farm with straight pipes that sound like that when they fire when its cold out. Sounds pretty mean.

Nate, never heard anything like that before, think one of them transmission would hold up behind a Cummins?

Radial engines are notorious for the bottom cylinders filling with oil when sitting.

The engine is a Pratt and Whitney R-2800 18 cyl 2000 HP radial engine.

These things are HUGE!

The big boys had the Pratt and Whitney R4360 Wasp Major. 28 cylinders and had a big appetite for oil, leaking and burning.

I think they carried about 40 Gallons of oil. My FIL says they changed every flight....what was left. haha About $355 worth of Rotella to us.

This paticular plane is an F4U-5 has about another 300 hp give or take a 100. Korean war vintage.

The video doesn't really do justice to the sound. Standing at the wing tip while starting is breath taking to a gear head.

These will drown out half a dozen Merlins running at the same time. No lie. Not to mention fly the pants off anything with a Merlin in it. haha Not that the Merlin wasn't a good motor or the planes weren't any good. Just not as good as the Corsair. If I was only 2nd best to a Corsair and we were on the same side, I still feel pretty good.

The starter motor transmission had a 100:1 gear reduction and put out about 40 hp. It was common to use these on the top fuel and funnycars for starters years ago. 48 volts 600 amps.
