Ugh... "6 bent wheels"
Ugh... "6 bent wheels"
I've had a vibration at higher speeds (70-75mph) on my '95 since I got it. The front tires are new, rears are in decent shape. Its' gotten to the point of annoying so today I finally took it in. They showed me on the balancer that one was bent up & said all 6 wheels are...can't say I've ever had 6 bad wheels on one vehicle at one time
.
Guess I'll be staying off the freeway as much as possible for now...
Anyone know where I can get some decent plain steel wheels for not a ton of $$ ?
Chrome would be nice too, just isn't real cost-effective...

My 92 had six mismatched wrong wheels on it whan I bought it. Couldn't figure out what was going on till I pulled them off the truck. Someone had stuck the wrong wheels on it that didn't have the proper dish (cup and cone I call them) but were just flat wheels. I ended up ordering six new correct wheels for it and the problem was gone. They were about $100 a piece from NAPA. Here's a pic with the wrong wheels still on the front and new ones on the back.
I still think 6 bent rims is VERY weird. I know my right front had about 5 weights on it before I took it in...2 or 3 of the big ones & a few smaller ones.
I looked on ebay a little last night...I can find the 8 luggers for the SRW 2500 trucks & such for reasonable, but haven't had any luck finding DRW rims yet
I would double check that one. My question would be did the tire shop have the proper centering device for your wheels? I have had them balance them way off and had to get them done where they have the proper equipment.

That TSB is interesting.
I still think it rides PRETTY nice for having 6 'bent' rims.
The other strange part is they said they re-balanced all 6 the best they could but 'did me a favor' & only charged me for balancing 4 ?

I hit a pole tonight with my 96 3500 and the passenger dually fender is destroyed. I have been thinking about converting my truck to SRW and this just might be the time to do it depending on what the insurance company says. If I convert to SRW I will have 7 stock steel dually rims for sale. 6 have newer Mastercraft Courser CTs 235/85/16 and the 7 tire is junk.
Let me further what I had posted. the steel rims have a punched center hole. The hub centric comes from that hole. Many use a cone shaped alignment tool to install the wheels on the balance machine. If you look at the center hub hole you will see that only about half way through is accurate in size due to the punching which is like shearing. So if the cone goes through the inaccurate side, you have a wheel that is out of round on the machine and will balance wrong. it will also look bent.
Also, for a proper balance job, take it to a shop that "trues" big truck tires. They will spin it on the truck, shave some rubber making the tire perfectly round, then spin balance it on the truck. You will ride very smooth and the tire will last longer.
