Tire rotation

For years, the normal procedure for rotating radial tires was to switch from front to rear. I'm hearing that now you can use an X pattern. Left front to right rear, etc.
Has the tread separation issue been solved? Or is this just a case of a dealer putting out BS?

I am told that the tread separation issue is not a problem and you can rotate the tires using the X pattern except for those tires that are directional.

Yup! I looked it up in the manual and also verified it via Michelin's own documentation!
Hard habit to break out of...

The best way to get millage is use the X patter, fronts cross back and backs go right up. The only problem with this is that on some of the mud tires, or bigger lug tires will cup cause of this unless rotated very frequently (under 5k) Front to back is best for aggressive tires. That's what I do. Mostly what wears on tires (unless you do burn outs non stop) is the outside shoulder from turns, that's it.

That is to get the best millage out of the tires, not MPG.

I've also heard that you can X rotate and I may try it someday but only when I get all 4 tires new at the same time. I'd be scared to do it on used tires that have only been rotated front-to-back all their life. Matter of fact, I'd expect ply separations if the X rotate was done to well worn tires that hadn't ever been X rotated before.

I just took mine into Les Schwab for it's semi-anual rotation and they just did front to back.

Forgot to specify that I wanted them X'd.

It was free, can't complain.

They didn't line up my center caps though, I'm kinda **** about that.
The lettering on the cap must line up with the "BF Goodrich".
I'll have to loosen them up tomorrow and realign them.

I have used the x pattern for years. I've had 2 sets that lasted over 80,000 miles with this treatment. Never had one separate.

Been doing the X rotation for years. One change is the X pattern, the next is front to rear, the next is X pattern.

Keeps the tires all nice and flat across the tread as well as you get some great mileage out of a set of rubber. I got 62,000 miles out of my last set of 305 Goodyear ATS's. Not bad for a 8000+ lb truck.

My local tire shop started doing it to customer trucks and he is seeing some tire mileage gains on his regular customer trucks.

Thanks Redleg . My dealer was rotating my tires every 2 weeks ( 6,000 miles ) . Then I was 1,000 miles from home , due for a rotation and oil change a dispatched 500 miles further away . I pulled into a Goodyear shop and asked for a rotation and oil change . They asked how I wanted them rotated . What do I know ? My dealer later also told me they have to switch the raised letters to the other side every other rotation .
