Question Tipping At Cracker Barrel

Sorry for the odd question, but it kind of has me wondering. I get my breakfast at Cracker Barrel 80 percent of the time and usually pay with my debit card. I check my banking statement online atleast every other day and when I look at debits from Cracker Barrel they are always just for the price of the meal. Say the meal was 12 bucks, I tip 4, payed 16 at the counter with my debit card, and when I check online, only 12 was debited. There has been dozens of instances that I can remember, has anyone else experieced this? I'd really hate to be inanvertantly short changing the waitresses

Haven't noticed that at the local CB - they seem to charge my card whatever I write down. Sounds like maybe their cashiers need to be educated....

I have noticed if I check the very next day I see the hold charge for the meal. A day or two later I see the total charge hit my account.

But if it has been "dozens of instances" I agree with Dan.....there needs to be some cashier training.

It has happened to me, but as mentioned, rarely. They need some more training it sounds like.

Wow. That makes me feel better about the $3.21 I spent at Whataburger this morning for a #9 combo and an orange juice.

So what do you order?? The super mambo-jambo breakfast of the day platter with a side of pig, extra biscuits, fresh fruit and a half gallon of milk??

I had a couple times where they actually charged MORE than what I had written down for the tip. $35 dollars @ Chilis plus $7 for the tip and they charged me $47 bucks ....................I think they need a new calculator!!!! Another time they only charged me a dollar more so I wasn't too PEEVED, but still, imagine how many people pay no attention to what happens in their accounts!!! Kinda scary if you ask me

I try to always leave a cash tip just to avoid this kind of problem. So far it has worked well I guess.

I don't get it. If you are using a debit card, don't you have to enter your pin on the "pin pad," and isn't the total displayed at that time?

Not if you are at a restaurant, they take your debit card / credit card and swipe it and bring you the bill to sign and to leave the tip............then after you write down what the tip is they run it again to add the tip and that's where the mistakes happen...........

EDIT

And with the debit card, they just run it as a credit card so you don't have to enter your pin number

I didn't know that last part. In fact, I thought debit cards didn't function as a credit card until the account balance was too low to cover the entire bill. You learn something every day.

Personally, I never let anyone get their hands on my debit card unless I can see their hands during the entire transaction, and I prefer not to use them at all, except at Wallys or the grocery where I can run the card myself and get cash back. At the Cracker Barrels I have stopped at, you always pay at the cashier, so that added to my confusion.

Clearly I need more......

How can they run a debit card without the PIN ? You don't give out your PIN number , do you ?
