Talk me out of getting a DMax
Talk me out of getting a DMax
Well Im pretty sure the VP44 pump is shot in my truck. Right now the plan is to replace it and sell the truck.
The idea of a Duramax/Allison is really growing on me. Add the Edge Juice & Attitude and have a 400hp 14sec truck. I know they have their flaws such as injectors. But if I get an 03 Chevrolet extended the waranty to 200k miles and will cover their design flaws unlike DiamlerChrysler. I would also like the creature comforts of the cheby.
I am really going to miss the ole' cummins roar.
I understand all traitor comments,
Jamie

not gona get any trator coments from me. When i traded my 2nd gen for my new 04 I REALY wanted a Dmax but they where way more money so i settled for a new Dodge and realy like it. I now am glad i got the Dodge but would realy like some of the features of the Chevy/GMC. One would be the biger back seat with out going to the full limo sized mega cab. and the other would be the Allison. I had one Dodge auto with a Cummins and never again. That was a bad combo. Geared all wrong for towing at a reasonable speed. I love my 6 speed but the wife cant drive it. I have put all 50K on this truck. It would be nice to have the Allison so i could trust the auto and have her be able to drive it when need be.
you get it for warranty, but void the warranty with the boxes?
I like alot of the things that make a GM a better vehicle (perimeter lighting, memory seats, creature comforts)
I like the simplicity of the Cummins. I lost my 04 due to pump failures and warranty cancellation - did same thing, put a pump on it to get it to dealer, and traded it for an 06.
no WAY will i put a box on this truck.
good luck either way.

---------- Get what ever you want to spend YOUR MONEY ON!!!!! That will make you happy wether or not the Truck has problems!!!!! The Model Truck that you are quoting is a good Truck, but like all they have there flaws!! If you do allot of towing with the truck then I would suggest to keep the Dodge. If you are a Highway Cruiser back and forth to work and dont tow HEAVY then go with the DMAX!!! Plus the wife can drive it!!

If you're interested in performance, you'd be way ahead with putting the money in the truck you have now. I mean, way ahead.
Of course, if you want the creature comforts or the image... Well, then you could still be way ahead with the truck you have now and extra money.
I don't understand buying nearly anything new. But I'm unique...

Ya, I guess Iam contradicting with the warranty and warranty voiding device but there are some local yocal dealerships who over look that stuff on all brands.
Iam more a a highway king and dont tow real often. When I got into diesel performance I was a dodge 24v guru. Bought the truck in my sig. Started reaserching and found out about the Ip failures being considered catastrophic!! and DC not doing much about it. And I 100% understand the pay to play theory, Everything I had on my truck is forsale to pay for the new pump so some other poor soul doesnt have to after I sell it to them.
Now after becoming more open minded I see the duramax is pretty quick with just a few mods. Also, I really like the way people talk about the allison and how much power they can hold with just a TC and VB. I more than likely will be selling my truck in order to get a Common Rail higher mileage dodge or a Duramax, probably a duramax because of creature comforts.
And RickCJ, I dont know what the best truck out there is, I assume its the one who makes the paying owner the happiest, wouldnt you?

Begle1,
I once had the idea of building a 600hp daily driver but have moved on to an idea of a 400hp daily driver (which I had). This is my break down.
Dodge 5spd(what i paid)
100hp sticks $225
Edge Drag Comp $400
Lift Pump $175
Big Line Kit $130
4" Exhaust $300
=$1230 w/out clutch or turbo.
And I needed a $700 clutch bad. And a Turbo. Est. 16.5 sec. 1/4 mile
Couldnt touch any Duramax I ever ran.
Chevy D/A
Juice/Att. $500
4" Ex. $300
Intake $150
= 950 And wont need anything else (EGT's maybe getting a little warm). Est 14sec 1/4 mile.
Just my means of justification.

Im really trying to keep an open mind about this.
With facts please. Can we (anyone on this forum) compare things like the Edge HOT Juice Attitude, Bully Dogs Crazy Larry Tune in a Common Rail Dodge assuming its got an auto with TC and VB only in the tranny. And the same hot juice and att or similar tune (150-175hp) in a duramax with the TC and VB only in the allison. I know EGT's are going to be real hot, I lived with in this one and can keep livin with it. In the time I had alot of fuel I NEVER stayed in it long enough street racing to do any damage, 8-10 seconds and you are going way too fast in town anyway. I can control EGT's with the right foot as Im used to it. I just want a fair non-baised(Yes, I realize Im on a Dodge website) comaprison with very comprable mods ( One fueling mod with a big performance tune, and slight auto tranny mods).
I want to see what truck better suits me. I want short fast burst in town and overall a nice truck. Will never see the drag strip or be on a dyno.

Jamie I'm kinda thinkin the same thing you are.
I've been workin alot of over time and been savin but this wreck I just had is gonna put me back for while but I still want a diesel but now I'm thinkin about a dmax.
See I won't tow with this truck, it will just be my everyday run around truck.
I want to go fast so I need an auto, still not sold on the dodge auto
Thrid, I can get a dmax for just as much as 3rd gen dodge so I'm thinkin why not.

Same here man. I want a little more comfort, I have manual windows, locks, seats, and no cruise control right now. I dont want navigation, dvd players and stuff, just some power accesories.
I dont drag race at the strip or shoot for outrageous dyno numbers. Im not too brand loyal I just want a good solid truck.

yes, they are nice trucks in my opinion, but the interior is small, and the seats aren't built like truck seats.
the motors are nice, but you are somewhat limited to what you can do to them. yes, with a few boxes or two, with stock injectors/turbo you can make great power, but with a Cummins, you can make great power WITH reliability.
I ran into your same problem about 6 months ago, and I seriously considered a Duramax over a Cummins, and I had a 2001 Powerstroke with 471 hp, and I was burnt out working on that dang thing.
I vote Cummins

Chevy/GMC are nice rides, and the LBZ is a blast to drive. If that's what you want, buy it. I wouldn't blame anybody for declining to participate with DC, considering how they act with warranty work.
