Steam Whistle
Steam Whistle
A friend sent me a video of an old steam Locomotive. It got me thinking how much fun it would be to build a steam whistle. I realize the importance of safety, and do know a steam plant engineer. Anybody ever tackled such a fun thing? I'm thinking how it would echo on the hills and valleys around here. It would be awesome! HONEY!, I NEED TO GO TO TOWN FOR PARTS, OK??????

They are not that hard to build. I found plans online to build one for a model train once to be made out of 3/8" copper pipe. I blew the dimensions up and fabbed one out of 3" copper pipe. I fired it off of the water heater I have built in to my 16 ft BBQ pit. I utilized a solenoid valve that dumped at 25 PSI. I installed a 3/4 Spirax Sarco ball and float steam trap. It worked like a champ. I had all of this hooked up to a direct digital HVAC control panel that we utilized to automate all of the workings on the BBQ pit such as damper control to maintain temperature and the wood feed to keep the fire going. It was a hoot and garnered a ton of attention at the local HVAC engineers BBQ fundraising cookoff here in Houston. It even garnered a local rocket scientist from NASA that did a write up in the NASA newsletter. If you don't have steam available, we tested its operation with compressed air while tuning its whistle plate. You could hear it 5 miles away when we let er rip.
