Yeah, that's a bouncers job description.

I agree with what you write and also agree with the people you agree with.

Makes a lot of sense.

Please share more of your wisdom.

Dfranks stated above the Highway patrol officer should be fired....I totally agree with that statement and I also think he should be charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
Just because someone is a cop does not give them a green light to beat up on people and power trip when ever they want.
I said IF he HAD to use his gun, in this case he did not YET need his gun. The kids and wife are not the subject of the debate. The guy just needed sense beat into him, I am sure the next time he is stopped it will be a yes sir no sir stop, as in the back of his mind he will think "am I going to get tasered??". Walk away like that from a cop 50 years ago and he gets a baton up side the head. I am sure a few of those died too but there was no video to record it.

The cop in this video may have been an idiot but the nut ball that got the ticket and was tasered was a bigger one.

Needed sense beat into him? Yeah thats smart.

What the hell is this **** Germany and the brown shirts handing out beatings?

Calmly asking for information from a Law enforcement officer now equals beating

Andy,
I am glad you didn't have anything to do with writing the Bill of Rights.
4th amendment specifically protects citizens against unreasonable seizures which this was when this guy was arrested for no good reason.

8th amendment also protects against cruel and unusual punishment.

There would have been no problem if he had just signed his name. If there was not a speed indicated on the ticket then it gets tossed out when he contests the ticket.

I am not a cop but I have had to talk to a few on the side of the road and they appreciate someone that does not give them crap. I have been stopped 15 or 16 times in the last 30 years and have been given 2 tickets. All the stops were in the 5 to 10 mph over on the highway and they were just checking to see if I was a bad guy of just driving a little fast. If I had given some attitude I am sure it would have been 15 or 16 tickets.

With about 150 cops a year killed I feel for them as I would not want to deal with Joe public that has had a few shots of liquid courage or has an attitude. Those that give it should not expect to not get a little in return.

After watching and reading a majority of the comments about it, I would have to say this officer is on a power trip. Too many times people are not aware of the "law". Was this an out of state driver? A lot of unanswered questions, so I'll make my own assumptions and base my reply accordingly. I know here in Indiana it is stated to you at the time of the offense what you are being pulled over for and all the particulars and if a citation is issued also, that a signature on the ticket is not an admission of guilt. That was never mentioned, nor was the fact that failure to sign can and will result in your arrest. Officers (not all, but most) take too much for granted sometimes that we the "public" know all the laws as well. Granted, ignorance of the law is no excuse, but HEY! Tinstar Boy! , make me aware of it BEFORE you whip out the tazer! There was plenty of time and opportunity for this LEO to provide all the relevant info to avoid this entire situation. When the man asked " why did you do that to me?" the officer responded " because you didn't do what I told you to do!" Does he tazer his own children, wife, dog when they don't OBEY him? I feel for the man, his wife and child to have had to witness this gross display of "authority". LEO's are people too. There just seems to be the Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde thing when you place a tin star on their shirt! I have several that are friends and they too like to brag about tossing some guy around and this, that, and the other. It only makes me wonder WHY am I friends with them? I have explained to one them that if he wishes to continue to be my friend, it is in his best interest to NOT replay the "stupid moments" of his career. He doesn't like it, but he also doesn't talk about them in front of me anymore.

After 18 years of law enforcement, including being a Field Training Officer, Lead Deputy and having written and taught recruit classes in High Risk Traffic Stops and Patrol Procedures, I am in real awe of all the “instant-experts” that have been responding to this thread…..who’d of thought there were that many Law Enforcement experts on this forum
It must be something, to be able to look at a situation and immediately know everything that SHOULD have happened and what everyone SHOULD have done , without having been there yourselves…
As a career Law Enforcement Officer, I will say that while the officers’ handling of the situation was not the best or anywhere near what I would approve of, he did not violate the law. His refusing to explain himself on the side of the road is in keeping with accepted law enforcement practice and teachings. Allowing the violator to control the situation places you and him both at risk. While we are blessed with hindsight, the officer was dealing with a lot of unknown information. Who is this guy, what is his background? Is he mental? Is he emotionally disturbed from the argument he was in the middle of with his wife? Did he just lose his job that afternoon and looking for a release? Not saying that any of those were actually there, just that the officer in any traffic stop is dealing with an unknown quantity on both the driver AND his passengers.
In most states, failure to sign a citation is NOT a bookable offense, but if the driver is from out of state, has an expired or invalid license , and for certain infractions, it IS a signature bond, and refusing to sign means going to jail.
Once the driver began refusing to comply with the officers instructions, HE took responsibility for escalating the situation. On the side of the road is NOT the time nor the place to argue, and I know of NO officer who would stand there and get into a lengthy discussion as to whether the guy deserved the ticket or not. That’s a good way to get killed, either by the driver, one of his passengers or passing traffic.
As to the pundits who argue that the officer should have used hands on force rather than a taser, all I can say is that’s got to be one of the most ridiculous statements I have ever heard. Let’s see.. Side of the road, single officer, dealing with resistant subject… yea, great idea!!! lets wrestle around and see if you can:
a) Take my gun and kill me
b) Roll out into traffic and get one or both of us killed.
c) Get injured and then sue me for not using other accepted law enforcement practices.
I really wish a few of you guys running your mouths could get out in a patrol car for a few nights.
Last word I will say on this is that personally I believe the officer did not handle the situation well, but painting all LEO’s as being thugs is insulting to me and many others, some of whom gave their lives aiding people JUST LIKE YOU.
Just because someone is a cop does not give them a green light to beat up on people and power trip whenever they want.” And “There just seems to be the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde thing when you place a tin star on their shirt! “ comments are simple ignorance or show a real lack of thought in what you are saying.
Thank you for deciding that my life as a cop, and the numerous injuries I have received, the permament limp I have now when its cold, the two stabbings, being shot at, being hit by vehicles, being spit on, the emotional scars and broken marriages, the funerals of friends and all the rest was simply because I wanted the chance to “nail someone upside the head” instead of actually caring about the world I live in…
Thanks…

OH, BTW, here is the FULL 10.5 minute video..a little more detailed than what has been put on U-tube and Good Morning America

If y'all want to take the time to look at the suspects hands immediatly before the taser was deployed and the relative body positions of the officer and suspect...
in all actuality the guy IS lucky he didnt get shot.....I would almost garuntee my weapon would have been out and aimed....
ignoring verbal commands, walking towards then past the officer turning away from teh officer, all while his right hand is going into his pocket and toward whatever that is strapped to his belt...
the officers tactics were poor in almost every regard, he should have reacted to the guy sooner.....

While he was an idiot, he didn't abuse his power. He did what he had to do to go home at night once the situation escalated. No matter what, the violator wasn't going back to that car, and that's the way it should be.

Gimmie a break. You have got to be kidding. Where are you coming up with Assault charges against the Trooper? What planet are your laws coming from because here in Earth, he was well within his rights to zap this guy. If I had a violator not listening to me, pulling away from me with his HANDS IN HIS POCKETS trying to get back to his car? He's going to get zapped, brought down or shot because I would rather be tried by twelve any day then be carried by 6. You haven't a clue of this line of work with that kind of statement.

He was anything but calm. He wasn't even close to it.

Andy,
I am glad you didn't have anything to do with writing the Bill of Rights.
4th amendment specifically protects citizens against unreasonable seizures which this was when this guy was arrested for no good reason.
Then bud, you need to go change the law in Utah my friend. Once arrested, he is subject to search and if you think it's wrong then fight it in court. Case law is NOT on your side here.

8th amendment also protects against cruel and unusual punishment.
Too bad it doesn't protect cops. Only the criminals. Go figure. Cops have no rights, and criminals have them all. Criminals are given the benefit of the doubt and cops are scorned. I'd like to see how you'd react when you're put in the same situation.
