Small engine gurus, need your help!

Just bought a 01 simplicity landlord DLX, love the mower, cuts like a golfcourse, but have one question.

When engine is stone cold and there is any kind of load on it it tends to miss and sputter and it even backfires a little. When its warmed up, it runs perfect, but when you first start it and go mow, you have to wait for it to get up to op temps before you can do anything. Its a 20hp Briggs 2 cyl vanguard.

Havent changed the plugs or oil yet, but did change the fuel and air filter. Also I noticed a small amt of oil on the airfilter coming from the carb. Figured that was probably normal but thoght id ask anyways.

Any help at all is greatly appreciated...bought it off ebay and trying to diagnose any symtoms quick incase I need to recind on this thing....

I haven't done any work on the bigger briggs, but i'll take a stab at it...

How long do you have to wait before loading the motor? Right away or 2-3 minutes. It could just be a choke adjustment or mixture adjustment.

It would be worth your time to change the plugs. Probably not the issue, but could be contributing.

I thought it was choke as well but I played with that and it made no difference. I may try the mixture adjustment, wasnt aware the bigger brigs had an adj for it...

we had a Kawasaki Mule that would do the same thing, always. the spark-plugs needed to have a less gap then the factory specs called for.
