"Sealed" bearings

Not trying to kick your soap box out from under you, but , i'm in college right now , taking a one year pre-employment agrilcultural repair course , and we just finished a unit on bearings seals etc. , and they preached it to us that LACK of lubrication was the #1 cause of bearing failure.
I know too much grease is a bad thing , but wouldn't NO grease be even worse?
kcastun, agriculture situations are a little unique. No grease is obviously bad. Typical disc bearings run very very slow. And if you go back to my initial analogy you can see the reference. Water up to you ankles; water to hips. If you are only trying to get through that pool of water at 10ft/min as apposed to 500ft/min you would not feel the resistance.
I would possibly agree with your instructor for your application but in the industrial world I stand by my comment about too much grease ruining more bearings than too little grease.
I can get you many referals that support my claim, what part of Canada are you in. Call anybody at Canadian Bearings/ BC Bearing Engineers and ask a senior counter man the main cause for bearing failure. If you get less than eight out of ten to tell you too much grease I'll send you CD$ for a case of Kokane...

KOKANEE!? i won't even waste my money on the call , now offer up some molson candian , and i might be interested.
It depends on how you look at the situation , i do agree with you that too much lubriaction is a main cause of failure , assuming it is being lubricated , but we all know farmers, stuff might not get greased when it should , being a farmer myself , i am guilty of this.
if regular maintenance is being performed , a lack of lubrication is nothing to worry about , but over lubing is very possible. in certain given situations lack of lube or over lube could both be main reasons for failure. i must say though , that i have never had a bearing fail from over lubrication.

I would agree with you; you wouldn't have a bearing fail from over lubrication. But you don't have a "Lube Specialist" employeed at your farm trying to earn his keep.
This person usually is one of the lowest paid guys on a maintenance team doing the most important job and he feels the only way he/she gets paid is to lube bearings. "Well, it's Tuesday; time to lube bearings at locations x35-x86". He just does it because thats what he's done all his life.
Trust me, this concept is not easly sold on verterans. If it makes you feel better I'll buy that Brazilian owned Molson Canadian for you. You make the call and ask the questions though....

I worked on a farm where we had good greasing habits, if you used the maching , you greased it before you used it.
I can see your side of the argument clearly , but i can also see mine. guess it's a tie?
