Radar Detectors
Radar Detectors
So, I'm considering the purcahse of a Radar detector.
What are the pros and cons and what do you all reccomend???
I've never owned one and have no experience with them.
Thanks for the help.

I've never owned one either, know nothing about them. I use a laser to write speeding tickets. Plenty of cars I have stopped have a radar detector on the dash.
You better bring your "A" game for your reaction time to beat the speed of light! Good luck with whatever you chose, if it saves you the cost of one ticket it was probably worth it.

a passport is awesome like the guy above said you better have your a-game unless the guy doesnt care and leaves it on. if he is shooting and turns it right back off you will get very little notice if any and they are practically useless if the officer is good.
Hunh, I have heard both of these arguments before. Also know people who swear by them.
Obviously the best sollution would be to not drive more than the posted speed limit.
What about Jammers or whatver they are called that are supposed to scramble the laser reading or something???

For laser your reaction time doesn't matter once they key up on you with laser it is instant readout but not so for the K-band radar systems commonly used. You can slow down fast enough to not get a ticket if you are alerted or see them.
I would second the Passport 8500 or 9500 models along with the Beltronics Sti Driver and the Rx65 model which is similar to the Bel 965, 995. The Valentine 1 is also a good choice it all comes down to money.
One thing to note is that with laser you can buy jammers, which are still legal, that will defeat law enforcement form locking on to you. However with radar there is no legal way to disrupt the reading without actively jamming (Transmitting a signal is illegal) the radar gun.
Best advice pay attention and drive the speed limit. I know I received 2 tickets in the last 2 years just b/c I was just thinking and didn't notice my trucks speed on a open long stretch of road with no other cars around.
No excuse other than not paying attention.

If you get a speeding ticket with in the first year you own it K40 will pay the ticket.
Yeah I have been lucky. I have not got a ticket for 4 years??? Something like that.
I do try to drive at a reasonable speed but sometimes on long trips blasting across the prairie for hundreds of miles at a time I admit I'd like to kick 'er up a notch and cover some more ground.
Probably the biggest deterrent from speeding for me is not tickets but the mileage that my 5.9/G56 Combo gets at 75MPH+
Yikes

I wouldn't waste your money. I know that in Texas, the DPS guys are gonna get you even if you have one, and if they see it, you're most likely gonna get a ticket. Just my opinion, and beings my best friend is Trooper, and I've seen first hand how it works, I'd say it's a pretty educated opinion!
The Escorts are very good detectors, sure there are times you don't have time to react, but for the times that I could react make up for it. When the speed limit is 55 and there's no one on the road and you drive that same road every day for 50 miles its hard not to speed up to 70. Drove around the Country a little and there are more Kband radars out there then lasers. Those Kbands spread there band all over the place and you can pick them up almost from any angle. There's usually lots of warning except for the instant on's. My $.02
The Valentine V1 is my choice for a radar detector. I find the directional arrows invaluable for knowing it the radar is in front or behind you. The laser capability is useless unless you pick up some scatter from the other car being lased. It will also give a false laser alarm with the LED taillights.
The lasers used today must be stationary, used at the side of the road or on an overpass. Radar is still used in moving cars to enhance revenue.
I seldom speed but like to know if I am being tracked. Here is a photo of the V1 remote display in the dash of my ’98. I removed the black plate where the “PRNDL” display goes for autos. With the remote display there is no lights on the detector to see, just the beeps and visual display in the dash.

What do you need to detect radar for? Perform illegal actitives with a sense of invincibility from the law?
Im curious if theres another use for radar detectors... maybe youre using it for something else.
If you let us know what you plan to use it for, we can better pick you a product to suit the needs

Nope, as I said I have said the only reason I would buy this product is to perform illegal activities, drive above the posted speed limit. Point blank.
I'm not looking for moral oppinions, but I understand your viewpoint. I know it's illegal to drive above the posted speed limit, Radar Detectors are NOT illegal in the area that I live.
Like I said, on long trips across the bald prarie, (and when I say bald I'm talking hundreds of miles of essentially nothing) I have been thinking of having one to lessen the chance of getting tickets. I know you aren't eliminating said chance. I know people who have them and swear that they help.
So I'm looking for oppinions on how they function, if they are effective and what the best models to buy are.
I think I smell a few hypocrites, hope nobody else ever drove 56 in a 55 zone.
But that's fine and I totally expect that.
Yes sometimes my foot is heavy. Personally I feel much more of a moral hatred for those who drive like idiots in parking lots, school zones and built up areas as opposed to goi8ng a little over the limit on Flat Open unpopulated country.....
But that's just me.
Thanks for the oppinions so far.

I can tell you from experience they work on k band. I have been running one for 4 years now and i get them before they get me everytime(knock on wood). I also use mine for the countless hours of travel through the prairies. Mine also works for photo radar and red light cams too!! If you do get one i suggest you mount it kinda high on your windshield and bend the bracket so it points down, so it sees over the crest of hills before they see you. By the way, They only provide you with a couple of second window to react, so keep ur foot close to brake.
