Thanks for the advice. I'm unconcerned about red light cams
I don't want to be in an intersection when the light is red! Yikes. hahaha

Funny thing, I have yet to ever have a photo radar ticket?? Blind luck or what I have no idea.

I guess one thing about it is, no matter how fast you drive, there is always some idiot driving way faster.

i also use one when traveling more so that i know where they are hiding than because i'm speeding. i try not to push more than about 5 over towing and thats almost every road trip.

i've gotten some good information from ... http://www.radarbusters.com/

i have also found that my cb works as well as my passport 8500.

Valentine 1 is the best, bar none. I've have the password, Bell, all of them. My best friend is an IT dork and he he's they are best too. It really does tell you where the cop is and that makes all the diff in the world

Yeah I agree with you bambam. Had my CB rigged up in my '99 and is very useful for locating where the police are and keeping track of bottle necks accidents etc.

I don't have a CB setup in my Mega, maybe someday.

I still have a class1 Licence but drive OTR stuff very little anymore, I work in sales now so I am on the road a lot in my "4wheeler" hahahaha.

Problem with the CB thing is where I am talking about there is little other traffic to keep you informed of what is happening. I am litrerally talking about BALD prarie.

hahaha

One of the guys I work with swears by this one.
Says he used to have a Valentine, but sold it when he found out about these.

I prefer to set the Cruise Control for 5 mph over and relax.

We have the opposite problem here.
Too many "Bucket-Mouth" drivers with cranked up radios, cursing like drunken sailors, and sound effects (echo, pingers, etc) rambling on about nonsense to try to get any useful information.

Thanks for the help.
If I stop you, and you have one, automatic ticket. I would say that's a con. The pros are, well.... not too much. Too many good hiding spots and with instant on, it's easy to catch people, detector or not.

A CB radio will help you more than a detector will. They pass the word on for miles, pretty quickly too. I listen to the CB when I'm running on the interstate and it always makes me laugh how fast they know where i'm at, and how fast they spread the word.

Spoken like a true cop. How many times have I seen a L.E. speeding by me to get to a convenience store to buy a snack.

I do not own or use one, but I have lots and lots of friends who swear by the Valentine 1 and the Passports. Of course they all travel considerably higher than the posted speed limit, so I guess they need one.

I have never had a ticket for speeding, I usually just set the cruise to whatever the speed limit is where I am traveling. I am no saint, I have traveled faster than the speed limit. Then there are the times where there is a lot of traffic and because I am paying more attention to the traffic I miss seeing the speed limit sign because I go by and just catch it as a semi-trailer blocks it. Then I go for quite a ways wondering what it said??? I am also guilty of the stuff where your mind is wandering about something while driving on an empty long stretch of road, and I drift up some, but usually I get that under control real fast when that happens, set the cruise.

I do listen to the CB sometimes, too many bucket mouths with their squeals, tones, and all that nonsense to have it on for any amount of time. Truckers ARE usually real good at giving out info about where the speed traps are set up, but it makes little difference to me as I pretty much all the time try to drive according to whatever limit is posted.

What I'm saying is that is there anyone out there including you who can claim that they have always and do always follow the speed limit. Almost all of us get on the highway to go somewhere and will go between 5 to 10 over the speed limit. A good portion of the older cops don't seem to care as long as you're not acting a fool. But how many of the newer breed of L.E.'s get off on writing tickets for less than 5 over the limit. When you go to pass someone who is doing slightly less than the speed limit do you not go over the speed limit to get around them? I know I do. As I said in my previous statement I have been passed by many L.E.'s who weren't going on a call. They know that they can do it without repercussions. Who is going to write them a ticket? That is all I'm going to say on the subject so it doesn't go into a debate when all the guy wanted to know about what kind of detector to buy.

First of all, I don't mind debating with you. Just keep it respectful and don't let your temper get the best of you. I'm not saying you have, I'm just stating that debate is fine as long as it doesn't get insulting....

Nope, I don't claim to always go the speed limit because I haven't. I had to reveal all of my tickets before I went to work in LE. I had a few of them, most of which were speeding tickets from years ago. I never claimed to have a perfect driving record and I never claimed that I always went the speed limit.

I agree. 5-10mph over the limit to me doesn't deserve a ticket. Of course, each case depends on the totality of the circumstances. If that person is speeding 10mph over but causing a hazard that is substantial, that's a different story. Going over 80mph in NC is considered substantial, even if you're in a 70mph zone. It's a mandatory court date and it's a misdemeanor.

Again, it just depends but I agree. If you're doing 75 in a 65, ehhhhh, not a big deal but if you're doing 77, you're going to get stopped.

When you go to pass someone who is doing slightly less than the speed limit do you not go over the speed limit to get around them? I know I do.
Yep. I don't disagree with this either. You must have just assumed that I try to act like I'm perfect or something. Most cops I know are the same way and are realists. They understand. For those who don't, well, I have a word for them but I won't use it here. Discretion of the officer plays a big role and some of them have no common sense.

As I said in my previous statement I have been passed by many L.E.'s who weren't going on a call. They know that they can do it without repercussions. Who is going to write them a ticket? But how do you know for sure they aren't going to a call? Is it just because they don't have their lights on? I go to many calls without my lights on because it's actually SAFER in a lot of cases to do so. PEOPLE FREAK OUT WHEN THE BLUE LIGHTS COME ON so in a lot of cases, it's better just to leave them off.

I don't mean to sound insulting, but I would suggest that until you've been in their shoes, do not judge too quickly. Yes, some of them out there just suck but that's not the case for the majority.

Here is a site like Gas Buddy that list where the known radar traps are.
I have checked it with the city where I live and it is accurate.
Use it at your own risk.

I've used a radar detector (when it was legal for some time over here) to prepare for irrational behavior of other motorists. (Like while doing the limit or even less than the limit they slam the brakes when they see the radar box or officer with the laser....)
The problem I saw with the detector was that the laser detection was marginal at best if the officer had a good aim and pulled the trigger only when he had the target vehicle in the sights.
The radar detection was quite OK, gave you approx a quarter mile pre-warning.

They ruled the ownership (or mounting in a car??) of any device that tries to detect or jam speed measuring illegal over here. Regardless of who you are or where you are from. So if some of you come over here it's extremely advisable to keep the radar detector out of your vehicle, the fines for it being installed go up to approx. 3k US$ !

It seems like the best detector is the guy that wants to drive faster, and there is always one of those. Just let that guy go by, or spend a little more time in the right lane and he's the one that gets snagged. If you are in the left lane and passing everyone, you get the ticket. If you are being passed he gets it. There is always someone who wants to pass everyone on the road, so let them "look" for the cop.

Learn the areas you drive in. I find cops in the same places at the same times, and areas where they are never around.

Realize that constantly looking for them is often more stressful than just slowing a few MPH and enjoying the trip. It's ridiculous to always be in a hurry and thinking everyone is in your way. I see people driving on Sunday morning like they were late for work and all stressed out. Bad driving is a bad habit.

Speed is not the problem. It's speeding through heavy traffic like you own the road that needs to be stopped. It is dangerous and raises the general stress level of everyone. It shows a complete lack of respect for anyone else on the road. When someone is looking for a way to beat the game, ie. radar detector, I begin to wonder why they think they are exempt from the rules. And if they are exempt how will it affect me, or my wife, or the guy driving sensibly next to me. Now I have to watch out for this clown that feels he is exempt from the rules he agreed to play by and can do what he wants. It's perfectly OK to do whatever he wants because he can't detect a cop in the area. Hmmm.

Maybe we should just throw out all the rules. I'm tired of only going 75. Driving on the left side would be fun. I think I'll go on red instead of green. Stop schmop! I want to go! Oh wait, it's only mister radar detector that gets to break the rules. I almost forget, he's exempt. The rest of us are just in his way.

Or not.
