Question for the car guys out there

I found a 69 or 70 amc javelin sst with a 443. I have searched the internet and they dont say anything about the javelins having a 443. The car is in good shape and the guy wants 500 dollars for it. Can anyone tell me about these cars with this particular engine and are they worth fixing up?? They are a little before my time and know nothing about them, but think the car would be a neat project. Can anyone tell me something about them?
Thanks,
Cody

I saw the same ad on the net too, but thats the first time I have even heard of a 443. It could possibly be a 343, but i could of swore the badge by the rear tire said 443. I'm real curious now. How good of cars are they anyways? For 500 dollars, it might be a good buy if they are decent cars.

I can't really answer your question as to how good a car they are. I remember them and at one time wanted one. Judging by the prices I have seen for a restored SST, if you can obtain a restorable SST for $500, then it sounds like a good project. There must be other guys out there that have a better idea of this than me.

I'd say if you like the looks go for it- shall be a nice car after you've finished and even if it ain't a rare species you are gonna love the beast after all the work you put into it.

Get it because you like it, not as an investment. Parts are hard to find and restored values are low. Look out for rust around window channels, rockers, trunk extensions, etc. It will cost guite a bit to put together if it needs a lot of work, but you can always drive it back out I have a '67 Rambler SST Hardtop Coupe project car I have been trying to unload for a couple of years, with no success. The car has rust in some of the afore mentioned areas, has been completely taken down to a rolling shell, but needs body work and re-assembly. No one really has any interest in it around here, even as a derby car (which I like to watch, but hate to see good classics beat up.) Any one interested, pm me for details. I might list the car stuff I have in the classifieds here...

I also have never heard of the 443, but have seen several 343's and 360's. Maybe someone made up new emblems after a rebore job on a 401?? I have seen many people do that with Chevy stroker projects, and some Dodge 400 strokers with reground 440 crankshafts.

I got curious and did a search on the internet as I had not heard of a 443 in any AMC product. The only engines I could find in the Javelin were 343's, 360's and 401's. Other than that ad I could not find one mention of a 443, not even in any AMC history or evolution. Checked into Javelins used as police cars and could not find any mention of a 443 there either. So what that car is that you have found is a mystery to me, but if it really does have a 443 in it, should go like stink.
Maybe call that guy that supposedly has a Javelin with the 443 and ask him about the engine.

I also got on the net and did a search as well and came up with the same results as you, but I also found the same ad as you did about the one car. It's a mystery for sure, but more than likely it's not a 443. I still think it was a neat looking car though!

engines offered in 68-69, 290,343,390. 1970-- 304, 360, 390. 1971--- 304, 360, 401. i grew up with these cars, actually rebuilt a 327 for a 66 ambassador in my living room. that was one bad mill. but i don't think there is such a thing as a 443, not stock bore and stroke anyway. but-- if you have found one for 500 bucks don't waste any time snagging it. by the way, sst i believe was a 1971.

Your question has been answered - the engine is a 343. I remember those cars and the 343 was a good performing engine. My first car was a 69 Dodge Dart 340, 4 sp, with 3.55 gears. My best recorded time in the 1/4 was 14.27 and if I remember correctly the Javelin ran about the same times. They never were very popular but I always thought they were good looking cars.

It is funny what we remember but the list price for the Dart was $3289.90 and I paid $2710.45. My family owned a Dodge dealership at the time but we sold out that year. I remember studying all the vehicle info and longing for a Dodge Power Wagon. Never got a Power Wagon but 35 years later I have a Dodge CTD.
