Police Scanners

So who's got one? What kind and where is it?

How hard to adjust/tune when driving cross country?

Has it ever saved your rear?

And I mean in your personal vehicle, not your police cruiser!!!!

i've got a uniden bearcat. works pretty good. I have it sitting on my desk, since i dont have a good place for it in the truck and in minnesota it is illegal so i dont want the hassle. It is not hard to tune at all, basically all i do is just switch it to the police channels or fire channels and just wait for a transmission once i get one that sounds pretty clear i lock the scanner onto it and then save it into memory. I have a couple saved now and i can have the scanner scan the saved channels. some of the things i hear on it are quite disturbing sometimes.

If anybody has any great ideas on where to mount one so if i ever get pulled over i dont get a load of crap from the cop please share.

i had an old one from radio shack. to tune it you had to change the crystals to change frequencies. it had 8 different channels and rabbit ears. but it was 115volt. i ended up selling it because most places are digital encoded now

I got a cheap one from radio shack years ago. It was programmable to a frequency, but you had to know it. Looks like a walkie talkie. Got it somewhere but don't have the battey pack anymore. Has dc jack though, may rig something.

I have had a bunch over the years. I have one in my patrol that's really nice. It's a Uniden Bearcat BCD996T. I like it because it allows me to listen to departments that aren't on our 800mhz radio system but are on VHF, or are on their own 800mhz system. It does digital P25 and all kinds of stuff.

If you want a thorough explanation about scanners, go to www.radioreference.com. they are the definitive guide.

Jack, how long you guys been on 800 MHZ? Do you guys run your own dispatches or are you direct dispatched through the county?

CD2500man, keep up the research, but include the laws of any states you might travel through. We only RECENTLY legalized scanner use in a vehicle here.

A lot of departments are going digital now a days. Have you priced a digital scanner? Most of them are around $500!
