2-way radios/scanners
I'm looking for a quality CB type radio/scanner to make a trip up the Alaska Highway with friends.
I'm kinda new to the radio thing and not sure where to look for answers.

Any decent CB and antenna would do the trick. You have to make sure that the antenna is tuned properly - VSWR (1:1 is perfect but impossible to attain - so close enough is good enough). An internet search on cb antenna tuning should get you on the right track quickly.
If you're travelling with friends in other vehicles, another option is to look into an FRS radio (Family Radio System) - those little walkie talkies. They give great short range performance and vitually clear of any interference/cross talk from other FRS users. Plus, the price is right too.

CB Radios are great to have, i just finished installing one in my truck. I love to have them to keep track of traffic up ahead, cops (bears), and just to let the time go faster when traveling. I also just bought a wilson 1000 magnet mount and i have almost a perfect tune. on ch. 1 my SWR is 1.1 on ch. 20, my swr is a little over 1.1 but not quite 1.2 and ch 40 my SWR is 1.2. this right now is behind an old stock radio shack cb that does pretty good. i get compliments on how i sound. however i am about to buy either a cobra 29 or a uniden 78elite... good luck
