I appreciate the input, but I don't really play that way. If I were to commit to Company B then I would tell Company A that I was no longer available.

After praying on it and sleeping on it and looking at the pros and cons of each, I've pretty much decided that I'm going to turn down the offer from Company B. That last "con" that I listed earlier pretty much answered my question. As I said, Company B is a company that I never would have even been remotely interested in if it were not for the opportunity to move to College Station. If I could move there and stay there then I would give it more consideration, but picking up and moving every year or two is not something that interests me.

From the tone of your posts, I ge tthe impression that you realy want to stay put, so A would be the better choice.
Unless your miserable where you are at( which is where you are if you get neither one) why take a position that you know your not going to be happy with????
Exactly!! And, even if Company A doesn't pan out I am confident that something else will come along. "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

Ok, I havent been around very long yet but what I have found is it doesnt matter the benifits or how much you get paid (to a point), what matters is that you are happy with what you are doing. If you are not, its not worth it. I would rather take a pay cut doing something I enjoy then make twice as much doing something that I dislike.
What I'll be DOING is pretty much the same with either company, so it all boils down to which one I think better suits the lifestyle that my family and I want to live.

Yeah, Austin is too liberal for me, that's why I'm still in Houston.
CS is a nice place to live.
For what it's worth, if I got a job in Austin we wouldn't live IN Austin. We'd live out west of there somewhere in the beautiful hill country of Texas. College Station is definitely a nice place to live, but it doesn't really have as much to offer as Austin does.

Eventually. In my overall plan, this is sort of the next step in that direction. Selling our house and moving will, in essence, give us a fresh start...ie., financial freedom. Once that "freedom" is established then it will open up all kinds of opportunities for my end goal....custom home building.

Gotcha. I have friends that live in Round Rock and Georgetown and commute to Austin. I like Georgetown, and almost moved there but I declined an offer from a four letter company with a crooked letter in Round Rock. Land and home prices has skyrocketed in that area. Especially around the rivers and lakes.

Silly me I didn’t know that you were in construction. All this time I thought you drove trains for a living
(Engineer). Sorry sometimes I just can’t help myself.

Have you ever looked into working for a city? , The pay is a little lower than in the corporate world but the benefits are very good and you would not be moving around.

I'm actually not an engineer. My degree was in Construction Science, so I guess you could say I'm in construction management.

Update:

Company B is actually turning out to be a much better opportunity than I originally realized. They are also turning out to be a much better company than I initially thought they were. They made me a very nice offer yesterday and, after getting some clarification on a few things that were important to me, I'm now giving some very serious thought to accepting their offer and telling Company A that I am no longer available.

Anyway, thought you guys might want an update.

Life & jobs are what you make of it. Go with your gut, work hard, be loyal to the company (no making bedliners on the side) and you'll do just fine.

But always be looking for the opportunity to be self employed. It's the only way to go, if you got the right stuff.

i feel for you. i'm on a Gov't project, with multiple companies, and a lot of them pay more than my company. but like said about your recent research with Company B, there are subtle things that make life more liveable.

the constant moving could be a drain, but it could be Ok (i think you don't have kids) if you kept yourself lean. (we have 2 empty rooms in our house - ready to move!)

a Second Mortgage on a house you own, staying in your current job, can always open financial doors you thought were shut.

you could Second Mortgage your current house, re-stack some debt, start your "end dream" in progress, and then roll with the punches more, and downsize homes later, or have to move,

and when you sold your original home, your income could be lower due to lower debts.

I like Company B. I like when a Man is a Man and tells me "we want you to work for us, we don't BS, and when can you start?"
not this moping around, I gotta ask Corporate, i gotta check with this other guy.

just tell me that you have authority to hire and fire, and you see enough in me to hire me. that's a man you can look in the eye and talk to on down the road.

Well...the beauty of Company B is that there wouldn't be as much moving around as I initially thought. 80% of their work is in the DFW area. I could spend the rest of my career with them in DFW if I wanted to, but opportunites for advances in both position and money are usually better for those willing to go to the out of town jobs.

Also, I found out yesterday that they don't EXPECT me to sell my house and move. The expect me to keep my house and, in the event that I am assigned to an out of town project, they would pay for my housing for the duration of that project. In other words, if my first project is in College Station, I'd keep my house here and they'd pay rent on a place in College Station until that job is done and I move back up here. My family could either come with me or stay at home (they'd come with me of course). I didn't know that before.

I agree with you about Company B though. Even though I was initially sort of taken back by it, I appreciate that they are to the point and honest.

I've been in a similar position before, and what I did was call Company A and tell them, "Hey, I'd really like to come work for you, you seem like a great bunch, but I have an offer on the table from another company right now and I need to know what you intend to do." They made me an offer that day.

I did that. They said they wanted to fly me down to Austin next week for a second interview. No offer though.

Doesn't really matter though. At this point I've pretty much decided that I'm taking Company B's offer.

Good for you Hoss. Hope it works out well for you and your family. A new job opportunity is always very exciting and rewarding if you make the best of it. Make sure the company offer includes paying for your monthly dues to DTR.

Sounds good!

I was always a nervous wreck when it came to new jobs, losing sleep, totally stressed out.

Guess your better at change than me!

Now that they are going to accomodate you and fam, I guess your feeling much beter about it?

I figured as much from the rest of the thread but I thought I'd throw my $.02 in... FWIW, I would have taken Company B's offer, too, if Company A hadn't responded quickly.
