I Need Career Advice Fast please

OK. I've got a really, really, really BIG problem!!! I am applying for a deputy sheriffs job and now i have been offered a job from one county.

well the county that i was in the running for, the one i really want, i called today to let them know that i had been offered another job and that i needed an answer from them because that is where i wanted to work. well the sheriff told me that he wants to hire me but i have to wait till next Tuesday at noon.

there in lies my problem what do i do do i take the job and move my family across the state or do i wait and see if the county board approves my hiring in the other county with the sheriffs recommendation

or how do i go about stretching out the NOW job offer till next tuesday, WHICH IS WHAT I WANT TO DO , till i find out about the job i want more

You could see if you could spend the next week "negotiating" salary with them and them pay your relocation expenses, etc to try to drag it out a week......

Not really sure what i would do..... they have you in a tough spot.....

Simply ask them if they can wait a week for your answer. If not I'm sure they will tell you. I doubt your start date is going to be the very next day anyway. Maybe tell them you need to discuss it with you wife ?????

Take the job offer, you won't start for a few weeks, if the one you want comes through, quit.

Good idea! That will look real good on your resume. NOT!

I would rather tell them the truth and take my chances......but that's just me.

Tell most of the truth...you need time to think about the offer, review the benefits, discuss with wife or family, asking for 5 days or so is not out of line in any way....dont burn any bridges that you may have to cross again! Taking the immediate offer and then quitting would be a total last resort...if there is any other way, take it!

Good luck!

I know it is easy to feel 'pressured' to take the 'sure thing' but most if not all employers are very understanding in these regards...At the end of the day, you need to do whats right for you, and jumping at the first offer doesnt sound like the best move....try keep it as a 'plan b' though in case you need it! Take your time, and truly evalutate the pros and cons of each!

My old dept. wouldnt make the job offer until we had a starting date set and a training slot at the academy available.
ASK what the starting date would be... most dept's will tell you, but want an answer so they can move on to the next guy if you say no..
Did you get the offer by mail, i.e. a letter? if so there should be a date to respond by on it, if not call them.
The worst thing you can do is be dis-honest to a LE Agency during the hiring process. That could turn around and bite you for a long long time........it sets the initial impression and your reputation within the dept.

Always tell the truth, it's a small world especially in your state! Plus you could always move to L.A.. Los Angeles County is always hiring deputies. You get combat pay if volunteer for East LA!!

I agree with the honesty idea, just tell them you need a week to think it over.

You really don't need to get into why, taking time to consider a career move is a legitimate request and they will most likely honor it.

yeah i'm going to tell them my finance and need a little time to go through the details that will be required with this commitment to move across the state. I want to make sure that this is going to be the best move for my soon to be family. i mean if they cant understand that and it comes down to it her/our happiness is more important than a job and I'll just pass on it
