Military Question, Please Help.

I have been thinking about joining the Military. I have a 24 year old brother in the Army (Inftry). I asked him if he would do it all over agian, and he said Yes!. How all have joined and what are ya'lls thoughts.
I am considering to be a Army Ranger. I want to one day work for SWAT, the Government, or something along the lines of that. Please help!
I would really appreciate your Help.
Thanks agian.
Trapper.

I'm an Air Force mechanic on the Herky bird (C-130), so it's quite a bit different than being a Ranger. The military taught me to pull my head out of my rear. If I had gone to college right out of high school I would never have finished. Lary Ellis (Top) was in the Army. He's done all kinds of secret squirrell missions and has the scars and injuries to prove it. I'm pretty sure he would go back and do it again. Even if you only do 4 years and get out it will teach you to see things in a different light. If you don't know which path in life to take or fear you're going down the wrong one it can do you some good. Not everyone is cut out for the military though. Especially as a Ranger. You probably should give Lary a call sometime and he can tell what it's like. He won't feed you a load like a recruiter might.

8 years and counting in Coast Guard blue. It's been a blast. I grew up an Air Force brat, and the military had always interested me. It's not for everybody though. But if you like it, there are many different things you can do. The Coast Guard has a good Law Enforcement program if that is what interests you.

I was drafted into the Army at the end of Vietnam. Didn't like it much, but would go again. You will learn to think for yourself and grow up and be a better person buy going.

8+ years in the Marine Corps, love every minute of it. Was a hat a for 3 years, I work on F/A-18's in the fleet.

It's not for everyone... but it's great for the people that it is for.

Ask Questions... we'll answer them...

Navy for 20 yrs & some change .... nahhhh, I didn't like it one little bit .

Do as much research as possible prior to walking into the recruiting office ... have your list of questions already prepared. Forewarned is forearmed.
(I was a recruiter once ).

Good luck with your decision,
PISTOL

I'm curretly in the Marines. Been in for 6+.... I am getting out and moving on with my life. I decided that the military life and a family is not right. I want to be there when my kids break their arms racing dirtbikes and what not, rather then reading it on an email from Iraq. I do NOT regret any of it! It was without a doubt the best decision i EVER made! I just dont feel ts a place for families. If I wasnt married and have a new born I would stick around for sure.

Do some research on what ypou really want to do and get out of it. I'm not going to go into my thoughts of other services on this post. Just make sure you take a look at all the services and what they can offer you in the long run. and be sure you talk to some guys about how they enjoy it. Dont talk to friends or family, they are going to give you biased info. talk to a stranger and ask them. I can help you get some numbers to contact if you need to. Pretty much anyone thats active wont have a problem talking with you if they are not too busy and you explain your situation

Now i will probably be run out of here for saying this but if you have any interest in going to college which i would suggest look into rotc. Because when you finish school youll be an officer, which is a little nicer in some ways. However you dont get to spend as much time with the troops etc. Like what everyone else has stated look into it very carfully.

Even if you only stay in four years it will effect you the rest of your life, it will give you discipline and self confidence but also employers will see that on your ressume and it will put you above the other people they are looking at.

24 years - retired and still working for the Army as a civillian.

Great job for someone who loves the life. Not for everyone though. You have to figure that out for yourself, once you are in.

I joined the Navy after High School in 1984... I would have never made it in college, but excelled at Navy training.. Made it to E6 in six years..

I did not like some aspects like the busy work and potential for double jeopardy, but overall I consider it one of the best moves I ever made..

It made me grow up and become responsible. While my training as a nuclear power plant operator did not translate into something that I personally went into after the Navy, many other aspects of my Navy training/experience have directly translated to my life after the Navy..

Unless you plan on making the military your career think hard about how your training will translate into a career later.. I rode a submarine, and while the torpedomen had a fun job, not a lot of call for that outside of the service...

My $.02 worth,

Bryan

Thank Ya'll so much for the info. This is proly the hardest decision of my life. At some points it seems like it would be great for me to do so., I have no Girl Friend to hold me back, no kids, nothing along the lines of that. I have been talking to my brother and he say's that if he could do it different he would do Ranger instead of 11C. The Recruiter put him in that and he wanted 11B. So i will watch out for the Recruiter's mess up's.

Also i weigh about 250 and im 6'2 is this a problem or should i just jump into it, if i make my decision, and not try to looses some weight? I know i will loose all of it by time i go to Ranger school. But just worried about the BCT.
Thanks agian.

Go for it. I would do it again. Deployments may be inevidable, but you learn a lot about yourself, and your country. I justy got back from the SANDBOX a little over a year ago, and have two brothers serving in Iraq as we speak. But you have to be sure, you wanna do it, and stick with it...

Good luck to ya...
