Mescalero Elk Hunt

Just got in from the first Mescalero Apache Cow Elk Hunt in Ruidoso NM. Last day, last 2 hours of the hunt.

We must have seen over 50 bulls in two days. Cows were scarce, and if seen were usually running. As we drove in past cow camp about 4 miles, I stared at the shadow line cast by the sun setting behind the montain. The animals worked the shadows hard while coming down to graze and water.

I spotted 1 bull, 2 cows and 1 calf. To cut the story short, 2 1/2 hours later after a 550 yard shot - uphill, she was in the blood wagon.

Gun - friend of mine built a 300 Remington Ultra-Mag, with a Super Sniper Scope. I LIKE IT!!

Anyone for Elk Stew?

Cool, I'm going deer hunting as soon as I get off work. I didn't get drawn for elk this year. Congrats I'll be using a Winchester Model 70 .270 with a Weaver scope.

We ranged her with my Leica rangefinder at 534 yard and I set my MOA at 8.5(550 yards) according to exball. Wind was virtually non existent. Bullet went in at the back quarter of the ribs, thru the liver and out the gut.

Elk cow hunts are $550 and are draw only. The reservation is 460,000 acres of more elk than anywhere in North America.http://www.innofthemountaingods.com/...2008flyer1.asp

I use to hunt the reservation before it became a business.....knew the game warden and his Indian assistants. Has become money maker for them. My buddy paid $10,000 for a bull hunt. The guide shot a nice mulie just for camp meat. Up hill distance has no relation to bullet trajectory....straight horizontal line distance does. Something to consider next hunt. What were you shooting? Even my .300 Weatherby would have dropped 3 ft. at 550 yds. , when zeroed in at 200 yds

In my exball program it ask for cosine or degrees, at 15 degrees it is a .25 minutes of angle difference in trajectory.
I dont haim high or low, I aim where I want to hit. Here's a sample. Im not in the same category as this guy but long range hunting is fun.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NxRS...eature=related or this one for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgVVy...eature=related

there are no game wardens on the reservation, they are called Conservation Officers. I am shooting a 300 remington ultra mag, bedded, ported, and a 2lb trigger.

I don't understand how you determine your point of aim. However ,the use of the 550 yards uphill is an invalid distance for you to figure your bullets trajectory. You would use the horizontal distance between you and the animal.

Well lets see. In the picture above there is an elk cow laying dead in the back of that truck. So however invalid my distance was, it sure killed that elk.

The ballistics program is called Exbal. If you have in questions about it please contact them as for I do not have the answer.
