March 6
March 6
Every year about this time I read this and remember what gave us our freedoms, liberty, and rights.
“So they came. Outsiders from Tennessee, Missouri, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Kentucky, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, England, Scotland, Germany, Ireland, and elsewhere, all dedicated to the cause of Texas and the desire to be Texans. The hopes, aspirations, and predictions about Texas by the newcomers proved to be true, but not necessarily for themselves. Like Moses upon Mount Nebo they were permitted to view the new land but not partake in its bounty. Instead men like Autry, Bonham, Cloud, Crockett, Cummings, and Goodrich were inducted into a very elite fraternity. They, along with approximately two hundred fifty others, became the men of the Alamo. On the morning of March 6, 1836, they gave their lives on behalf of Texas and thus irrevocably linked themselves to the land of their adoption in a way none of them could have imagined. They came to Texas as emigrants – outsiders. They gambled everything they had for a stake in Texas. And sacrificed themselves on the altar of Texas liberty – as Texans”
