MA to SC drive- places to see and stay?

On Thanksgiving, my GF and I are taking a drive down to Anderson and Greenville, SC from Cape Cod MA by way of I-81. If anyone has ideas on things to see along the way, would you post your suggestions? It's been about 9 years since I drove OTR, and don't remember what's out there. I do remember enough that we're avoiding I-95 completely... 84 and 81 is so much more scenic. It's been so long since I was able to just go for a long drive... I'm so looking forward to it. It'll be like old times again, only no 10-on 8-off to fuss with.

We're planning on stopping for fuel at the Flying J in Clear Brook, VA, and somewhere cheap in western SC. Any recommendations on inexpensive but decent places to stay around Anderson and Greenville?

Well, we made it back. Drove about 2700 miles total. Went out to visit a cousin in WV, then down to Shelby, NC, then along Hwy 11 through Pickens and Greenville counties. Drove all over the Anderson and Greenville areas. I kind of liked the area around Starr, SC. Ended up staying at DaysInn a lot. Seems they had the best overall rates for a decent motel.

Fuel was a lot cheaper down south. Anderson and Greenville was higher, but found a place just outside of Greer,SC that had diesel for 2.38. Then, the flying J in Wytheville, VA was 2.39. I reprogrammed the XZT to milage, and I got nearly 23 the whole way overall.

Can't wait to go back and look some more.

Man, I'm sorry I did not see this before... I could have brought you down to Beaufort and showed you Parris Island and Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort... ever touched an F-18 before?

Alaska is another place I'd like to drive to. I looked into flying to Palmer once, but never could find the time.

We had a good time. I still would like to see Parris Island some day. And, no, can't say I've ever touched, let alone, seen a F-18 up close. Must be an awesome sight.

We'll be back down again, and I'll send you a PM when we do. I really liked South Carolina.
