Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has misplaced one of its M-16 rifles

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has misplaced one of its M-16 rifles, officials said Tuesday.

Well I feel much safer now.

Supervisors have been ordered to ask every department commander if they have seen the rifle, to check every vehicle and unattended locker and to document everything. Officials have the rifle's serial number but because it's an excess weapon given by the government, it wasn't tracked as "acutely" as other weapons, Whitmore said.

The assault rifle, which is most commonly used by the military and law enforcement, was given to the department by the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (OES).

I can see how that happens; it is California. The new gun control bills in CA outlawing all these sorts of firearms applies to LEO as well.

Heck, I've misplaced all of mine....

No idea where they went...

When it gets down to it I don’t feel that most officers are any better at keeping track of weapons than the politicians think I am.
We have a small combined SWAT team (several cities involved) and they where using the range that is on the water plant grounds.
Came time for lunch, they all sacked the weapons up and put them away….except one placed his on the trunk of the car and drove out the gate. Luck would have it that I found it in the middle of the road in front of a house.
You can imagine the panic after lunch when I and the chief were having target practice. Chief left me firing and calmly told range master he wanted a weapons inventory.
