Looks like winter is back....

After 3 weeks of above zero temps, looks like its safe to unplug the freezers again. Last couple nights it has been between 40-50 below with highs in the daytime of around 20-30 below.

Jeez la weez, 40-50 below is crazy. I feel bad for your trucks.

We've had a very very mild winter up here. All this week was in the mid thirties(above freezing). We've had a couple of -20* days but no snow realy. I'll tell you what the worst part of winter is, wind. It can be 30 below and if there is no wind it's all kosher but when it blows it just cuts me up.

I have always wondered this, What in the world do you heat your house with when the temp is almost always around -20f. and below in the winters? certainly not gas or electric. What R-value insulation is in those houses up there anyway?? It gets cold up here on my mountain -10 some nights but dag gone !!! -50 !!!!!! What if you have horses or cattle ?? I would guess a heated barn is the only option...
Maybe it is like the summers in Arizona where it is a "Dry" heat. It there such thing as a "Dry" cold???

Nate-03 D...Thankfully the wind don't blow to much at these temps but when it does it gets pretty nippy, 60 below an 50+ mph winds will make your eyes water.

rollinsmoke...He must go to UAF at Fairbanks, when we head out for the winter people look at us funny, shorts t-shirts an sweating, I try to where my Alaska hat so they understand.
p.s...noticed your in Indiana, I was born in evansville.

s cesnick....I have a wood stove and a Toyo fuel oil stove. My house is 8 inch logs (thermo mass) stick houses are made with 2x6 frames with 6 inches of insulation or spray foam or 2x4 offset with 8 inches. My roof is 10 inches of spray foam around R50.
Horses an Cattle handle it pretty well with just enclosed sheds so they can get out of the wind, and our milk is thick with cream because they produce more in the cold, pigs need a heated barn. Propane pretty much stops flowing at 45 below so you need heat pads on the tanks, to keep my cook stove working. And yes its a dry cold, cold air holds less moister than warm air, its all relative...RH = Relative humidity

ofcmarc...Sure glad to see the sun again, I loose it for about 2 1/2 months, starting to get low on vitamin D, been standin in the rays when I go out for a smoke.
