Looks like Winter has arrived...57 below

These are the temps that make/break you of your love for Alaska. It was 57 below this morning at sunrise, and it is up to around 48 below, and skies are clear and no wind, so tonight it could very well get a little on the nippy side. With conditions like this and living in a low valley the heat will rise, and the low lands can sometimes see extreme cold. Just got back from my jog to the mail box, yes I jogged today since I was to lazy to get dressed up, so I jogged down in a pair of sweat pants, sweat shirt ,socks an slippers and fleece jacket. with hats an gloves, by the time I got about half way back I wish I had wore my face mask, cause lungs were starting to hurt from the cold and from breathing in the cold will freeze the moister in your mouth in to crystals and can be painful an life threatening to sled dogs. So I slowed down and allowed myself to recoup a bit and made it back ok, funny thing tho, only junk mail in the box.

57? That isn't too cold; I was in 64 degree whether once; I did have long johns, a leather jacket, beanie and heated socks on, so I might have been a little more prepared than average, but I thought it was manageable.

Actually, I just came in.....

Very breathable 20 degrees and about a foot of snow- I couldn't ask for better conditions! Siberiain flew past me when the gate opened, he is off on a run tonight , took the Samoyed with him (aka wonder dog) it's a wonder he can put four paws on the ground, he thinks he's human. We think the evil russian will sell him ....

AKPAUL man, jaunty little run today wasn't it? fer sure those ice crystals will cut- tongue, lungs, eyes...!!! holy smokes man, that is just exposure to the max. glad your wore slippers- hope they were the fluffy pink bunny ones too! LOL up there is 'sweat pants' an oxymoron?

and for junk mail. that should be a crime! hope the 'run' was a maximum of 50 yards......hope you have a hell of a hot water and heat system.....

here's warm thoughts sent to ya, paul from all of us here in Northern NY

Weather guessers are calling for -1 to -4 in these parts this weekend.

Might have to put on the long pants.

Had a squirrel at the bird feeder this morn, let my attack dog out for the chase which didn't last long. Kinda hard for a dog to run while holding half his feet in the air, let him back in and he promptly jumped back on his bed, A few minutes later I saw the evil squirrel outside again, hollered for the defender of the yard, he just laid there and looked at me saying that he didn't care, let the little bugger have the bird food.
The used to be pink, LOL actually there hand made by a native friend, made from moose hide an rabbit fur, they are quite nice an warm, would have been comfortable if I had worn my fur hat too.
My house is 8 inch logs and I keep it a comfortable 70 degrees. and my water heater is up above my utility room where the ambient temps stay in the high 70's

I just saw snow for the first time last week, and I'm 24! It was in Colorado.

I just looked at your 10 day forecast and it looks like a warm spell coming. You may get above 0 in the next few days. Must be short term global warming. I was down to 44 below in Wyoming about 20 years ago. My dad could get his old Ford diesel running and it was ok as long as he never shut it off. Had more trouble keeping his gasser Blazer running. How bout the Cummins? How does she do when it is that cold? Do you treat your fuel, if so, with what?

Does that German Shep sleep on the foot of your bed? I have been camping in a tent at about 20 below and all the hound dogs we we had got to sleep with me. My buddies just about froze, but I was fine.
Post some pics if you can.

Only the tough survive up there.

Paul, just curious, is that actually Delta Junction or is it Fort Greeley? Beautiful place to visit, I guess I would be a show bird if it lived there

We just had a local boy shipped to Fairbanks in the Army. Got a kick out of it, he hates cold, that is cold here in Alabama I checked the weather for Fairbanks the day he arrived.....-40. Bet he does not mind Alabama winters when he gets back.

I was up there in 1996 for a visit.... in June. Don't think I would have liked the bike riding in winter on the Alcan. Was bad enough getting eight inches of snow on the way back in Yucan. Really beautiful country though.

I'm actually about 30 miles east of Delta Jct. toward the Johnson river...Down in a hole off the Alaskan Hwy (we don't call it the alcan, kinda like Denali not Mckinley guess we're funny that way) I get a different weather pattern than Delta. Any way I steped out side for some firewood and a easterly wind has come up and temps have risen its now only a moderate 30 below.
