Looking for a Cherokee

Hey Guys,

I'm looking for a 1989-1997 or so Jeep Cherokee with the 2.5 liter engine, with a/c. I dont care if its 4X4, or what kind of tranny it has. Needs to be $1500 or less and in the East TN, North GA, Western NC area.

This is for my 16 y.o. son. I dont mind doing small work on it but need good mechanical condition.

I have tried autotrader and the dang 2.5 liter is hard to find.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Generally speaking cherokees had few 2.5s, most are 4.0s the difference in power is a bunch specially with the 4.0 HO. mileage wise the 4.0 can get 18 to 23 on the highway. there great bullet proof motors both of them. Go for the 4.0, or does the insurance industry frowm on that one for a young person?

My '91 XJ LTD has 170k on it. Great car, 4x4.
The 2.5 is the boat anchor of the jeep motors. Get the 4.0.
The best years are 91 up. They have the better fuel injection.
Mine going to my son when he graduated high school.

I agree, go with the 4.0L you'll be much happier. Or, If you can find one, they put a little 2.1L Diesel in them.

I think he's trying to slow the boy down. I've always thought that the '78 - '92 GM B-bodies (Caprice, LeSabre, Delta 88, etc.) were ideal cars for teenage drivers. Big and safe in an accident, get 'em one with a V-6 and it's too slow for them to get in much trouble. Wagons are the best because their friends won't want to be seen in it. Get the boy a baby blue '83 Pontiac Parisienne wagon.

This is the best AutoTrader would do on a Cherokee.

I agree get the 4.0. If it's a drive to fast thing he'll find a way to go fast with either motor and the 4.0 is better all the way around.

The 4.0

Is a real treat.. Im MT, when i was with the forest svc, we took a cherokee a few times when we had four ppl to boot, and it was awesome in the mud, sand, hills, and everything you could toss at it. Really aggressive differentials, lots of guts from the low end part of it, four wheel drive was a treat to say the least. I loved it and could honestly say id own and drive one if i had the chance to do so.. But one with a 2.1 diesel... yeah...

I dont know about the 2.5, four bang so to say, But this was my experience with a jeep. It was a 95, 120K on the clock, 4x4 with a five speed...

Tx

I agree, go for a 4.0! the best years is 91+. 8?-90 had crappy closed cooling system. 90 started the better AX15 transmission (Dunno when the AW4 automatic started?) and 92+ I think started the "HO" motor (don't think its really HIGH OUTPUT it's just a little more refined than the earlier motors).

LOL, Thanks for the replys guys!
I have had a cherokee with the 2.5, and I now have a cherokee with the 4.0.
Yes, the 4.0 is a torque monster and a great, long life engine (wonder if thats why they dont use them anymore) But my 2.5 cherokee got 27 mpg on the highway and I put 275,000 + miles on it before selling it. Never touched the engine. Best car I ever had.
On the other hand, my 4.0 gets an average of 18 mpg.
Since my son is going to have to buy insurance and keep gas in it, and he wants to work on the car himself........ The 2.5 makes more sense for him.
I'm still looking.
