LEO protocol for concealed weapons
Several of you have mentioned "class" ? No classes needed here in Indiana! Pass the background check, have a reason to need a CC permit ( can be almost anything from targets to safety), and pay your money, and you have a CC permit.
To the OP - I have often thought the same about "how to handle the situation". According to several of my LEO friends, you can either show them the card with the DL ( he looks for the pink card when you have your wallet open anyhow! ) or neglect to mention it. I believe I will hand my card with my license if ever needed. My one LEO friend says he usually hands it back with a snicker saying " this must have been stuck to the back of your driver's license!" He does appreciate it when people make him aware, but says it really doesn't influence his actions either way. He always assumes the worst and tries to be prepared.

You got that right. The state claims you can aquire a CCW with the proper paperwork. But I know quite a few guys that have tried it and not a one has had the paperwork returned.
That was one of my pet peeves when I lived in Indiana. I worked part time at a gun store and you would not believe the amount of people who carried loaded weapons into the store who literally did not know how to unload them. I had one woman carry in a 1911 hammer back safety off and hand it to me barrel first. These people also had valid Indiana CCW permits. I also used to love seeing the outlines of pocket rockets while shopping.
The worst part is now I live in this godforsaken state where we are trying mightily to get a real, tough as nails CCW law passed, and all we can get is our Legislature refers to us as wanting to take Illinois back to the "Wild,Wild,West"
Heh, they get to carry...............

Please do not turn this into a political discussion, that can be found at our sister site :

In Indiana for those not familiar it is called a "License to Carry Handgun"....
As far as I know there are no provisions in state law that mandate that you declare you are carrying if pulled over.
However best judgement should be used if your firearm is in plain sight or is on your person.
Obviously you should always comply with the direction of the officer who has stopped or detained you for the time being.
I have been stopped while carrying several times in Indiana (back in the day when I used to exceed the speed limit on occasion).
My Handgun license was always in plain view of the LEO and they never once asked if I had a "gun" with me or in the vehicle....and I never volunteered the information either.

If you ever come through NC, it's law that you must notify LEO that you have a concealed weapon in the car and that you carry a CCW. If I run your name and you come back with a CCW, I'm going to be REAL curious why you didn't tell me that you had the permit, or that you head a weapon in the car and you might not like my reaction. Not telling LE about a weapon isn't a good idea.
