The distance warning is referring to stones and debris picked up off the road that won't get stopped by a lgally applied mud flap. They still need to keep the trucks clean and will usually get talked to if it is noticed that they haven't made an effort.

What's up with that? You tell somebody there are a billion stars in the sky, they take your word for it. Put up a wet paint sign, they have to touch it.

oh, and the rocks,sand,gravel,coal,etc flying out of dump trucks while your riding your scooter(trust me,golfball sized rocks at 70 mph in the chest do not feel good)
