AND Buck....you don’t want any of these stacks...after I got em up here and looked at them close......I would not put them on my truck unless you had a ton of time to work with them ....and even still they still might be a little rough......IM going to have to try to polish crap out of the ones i got set aside for my ride......we will see.....sorry i didn’t get back with you.....
On a 02 the timing belt is due @ 80k. They are an interferance engine so if the belt breaks, you a 99% chance it will bend the valves.

Gotcha, about the stacks.

OK....80K is not too bad then.......and now i can see justification for the water pump.....if it was 50K or so....i would go every other time......COOL....SEE! This is the stuff i wanted to know.....I would make them put a new belt and WP on it before we bought it! Thanks!

BuckshotmcKee, I have a question for you if you don't mind.

Have you seen any problems with the XM Radio? We have a 2006 Jetta TDI and my wife told me yesterday that the Sat. Radio wasn't working, but the AM, FM, and CD were all fine. The channel numbers and program were being displayed, but no audio. XM says it's in the radio?

I'll give my opinion of the TDI's now:

Ours is a 5 spd and has about 14k miles on it now and we have a lifetime average of about 38mpg. I use a spreadsheet to calculate lifetime and per tank mpgs. Best tank so far is about 44 mpg, but we haven't taken a long highway trip with it yet. Normal for us is about 70-30 city-highway. I'm very happy with the mileage. I'm also very happy with the engine and drivetrain, the car is really fun to drive.

However, I'm beginning to be disappointed in the rest of the car. I've had it back to the dealer 2 previous times, and from the above problem, it looks like a third time is imminent. It took VW service two trys to figure out why my airbag light was showing. First time they said everything was fine and basically cleared the code. Then a few days later, same thing happens. This time they replaced something and it's been ok. Now, to me, a malfunctioning airbag is a big deal and should have been properly addressed . And something as basic as a radio screwing up isn't exactly giving me a great deal of confidence.

At this point, I think I will sell it before or shortly after my warranty expires. I bought my truck about 8 months before we got the Jetta and my truck had 270k on it. I've basically done only routine maintenance on my truck and it's never been in the shop. I guess that has something to do with my frustrations. Sorry for the long post.

Brad

Nope. The Passat 2.0 is a different engine than the Jetta. The Passat has 134 HP and 247 ft lbs of torque. Way different peformance. It's tuned like the Cummins with a lot of low end torque and cruises over mountain passes in OD. The car is completely different too with a longitudinal engine, forged aluminum front suspension members, etc. I think the engine is available in Europe with 204 HP so it can easily be bombed to way over stock.

I've seen a couple of problems with XM. One, we put a new radio in, the 2nd we replaced the XM module (I believe it was), we replaced an antenna on one because a car warsh broke it, and a couple software updates (these were 05, early 06's).

No problems with the Sirius radios.

Hey, I really appreciate it, man. I hate having to take it to the shop, but it doesn't sound like a big deal.

Do you mind if I shoot you a PM when the next problem arises?

From what I've heard VW had issues with our emissions for 07 and had to make a change from the rest of the world .
All [ modern ] diesel eng.s are interference , can not get compression with a combustion chamber [ or what we think of a com.cham. in a gasser ].

i myself would look thru the tdi club for a guru in your area to do the t-belt.i'm not condemning all dealers but when i went to order up a t-belt,waterpump,serp belt.rollers and stretch bolts.they asked me why i wanted the bolts and rollers as they never replace em on a t-belt job.i told em to skip it and ordered a t-belt set from dieselgeek.cost less and had it in 2 days.if you do buy one get a vag-com.it is your most valuable tool.

We've had the same problem with the XM Radio in our '06 Jetta, and have had it back to the dealer 5 times in the past 15 months for fixes that didn't work. Now, they are saying that it's a problem with the Instrument Cluster Control Module not being able to communicate with the radio. We are bringing it in next week for a fix that they say will cure the problem. We'll see.

Other than that, we've been pleased with our '06. General around-town mileage has averaged between 41-43 mpg, and 50 on the freeway. Good build quality. Our daughter's '03 was the last full year before the Pumpe Deuse engine. She sacrifices 10 hp, has a real lead foot, and gets 45 mpg in town, and 53 mpg on the freeway.

Be aware that you can't just go down to the local Jiffy Lube to get an oil change. VW dealers have a virtual lock on the very specific oil that you have to use on the 2004.5 and up diesels. You can find it on the internet, however.

Good luck.

This is one of the reasons I will not buy a TDi. The Cummins and my 91 Accord both use standard, readily avalible parts, oil, fuel, etc. The quote I saw for T-belt changes is also quite high - I owned a Volvo 850 Turbo previously that, with a new water pump and drive belts, only cost $365 at a Chicago-area dealer to replace the Timing belt.

VW may had designed these cars for those who "know little about engines" but (and no offense to Buck as he works for them) they also seem to trust that people who buy them don't research the cost of ownership.

What's wrong with your radio? Maybe I can give ya some inside info.

As far as the oil goes. There are more oil companies out there that are starting to make the 505.01 oil. I believe the new 07+ diesel are going to be using the same/similar formula the vw started 3 years ago. I have a complete list of approved oils for the 04+ Pumpe Duce TDi if anyone is interested.
