Jeep Liberty Diesel

My dad is interested in getting a Jeep Liberty Diesel. Does any one have one or know a lot about them in terms of reliability, fuel mileage, and any other important info. Thanks

My Dad has had one for about a year now. He says it's the best vehicle he's ever had. He just went on a drive to Arizona and back to CA and got just over 26 MPG with it.

There have been one or two recall notices but he hasn't got any of the work done because he says it runs perfect and he doesn't want anyone working on it. I'm not so sure about that approach but it's his car.

The TC seems very weak to me and it revs a lot when you get on it. But that's not a problem unless someone is racing or bombs it or something.

It's much more luxurious than his old Cherokee and less capable off road, even though it says "Trail Rated". I think that means Paved trail rated, or freeway rated.

I like it mainly because it's a diesel and not so much because of any other features, but it is 4WD and comfortable. It runs great, has some turbo whistle and has good power.

Since it was only made for a year or two and dropped because of the increasing smog rules, it might be hard to get parts for in the future, I don't know, but I'd take it over a gas one without hesitation.

I doubt the parts will be hard to find. When i had mine and did the reaserch I found ou that motor is used across the dodge platform in europe and they have made well in excess of 500k of them. The parts will have to come across the pond though and that will hurt the in the back pockett.

Hmmm That might explain why I saw a Cherokee today that sounded like a diesel as it drove off. Looked to be a couple of yrs old.

That's the mileage we get on the highway with ours - 25 mpg . As for recalls , more than a couple - ball joints , torque converter , heater motor (fire danger ) . There's another but I can't think of it now . Only 24,000 miles on ours and we've had it in a couple of other times for warranty work . With diesel priced higher than gasoline as it is , and only getting 25 mpg and the long wait for recall parts , I wouldn't recommend them . Service costs are also higher . They specify Mobil 1 synthetic oil but not longer service intervals .

The Grand Cherokee as badged here has a 3.0 V6 diesel in it.

The engine in the Liberty is made by VM in Italy. It is a subsidyary of Detroit Diesel, which is owned by MB.

Nah the one I saw didn't look like a liberty at all.
A much longer vehicle. I heard the lady start it up and my first thought was, "That's a diesel" But as she drove off I saw no diesel badging and it sounded a little off.
May have been just a real poorly running gasser with issues.

Another interesting glitch, at least here in CA where they were never sold new, is that some dealers won't work on them or do the recall stuff on them.

At least at the VW dealer they will work on my Passat, but they are clueless and not ready to take responsibility for their mistakes, claiming, after the fact, that they cannot be expected to know everything because they don't see very many of them!

When will diesels finally become mainstream? Sheesh.
