Ice storm and fire trucks don't mix. Second run this morning and we made it about half way up this hill. Luckly it was just a false alarm but it is going to be a long day. Still freezing rain and sleet as we speak.

At least there was no damage. Just a 2 hour wait for the wrecker

Oh yeah.... About 5 mins worth of towing and we were on our way again. At least until the next time we get stuck.

In this situation I’m not so sure that you have to use what the city gives you. From my past experience (I also work for a city) with cities the purchasing agent knows squat about what he/she is buying .He/she only knows that it is at the lowest price. If you or the chief will take the time to go and scream, yell, kick doors or what ever it takes to get the attention of the public the management of the city will cave in and get you what you need.
This could have been a real emergency and due to the incompetence of the city staff, the fire department could not respond. There is no substitute for real chain on the drive wheels when it comes to ice. Also from past experience take those cable chains and put them on the trailer tires. This will reduce jackknifing when turning and stopping .

If my house is on fire, and you pull up in front with a 'Dozer, I don't care if it has lights and a siren on it or not, there's gonna be a fight.

Just made me think about it. There is a place on I-55 in MO just before you cross the Mississippi called Boomtown. Tourist shopping center---one end of the building is fireworks (large building.)
They had a fire last year and lost everything except the end of the bldg the fireworks were in. His son-in law took a buldozer and drove thru the bldg making a fire break and saved the firework end.
Was just in there last week and he has it completly rebuilt. ABSOLUTLY beautiful. Good food in the rersteraunt too.

Not with these!

Tell the city you need these:

Studded tire chains (a.k.a Trigs) are the only way to go IMHO. Up here we have no use for cable chains - they usually make the situation worse as in your case. With these, you pretty much go anywhere you want to.
