Yeah, right....

But where I used to live in WY, it's the wind, not the snow that's the problem. Wind strong enough to move log chains across the flatbed! Or move hanging chains about 15-degrees. Now, that's windy.

Montana people...!

I've been thinking a lot of moving out to MT. I visited last winter and loved it. I am going to be going there again in November but only for a few days. Going to be hauling a car from Canada to Arizona then hauling another car back to NJ, but I'm going to take a detour up I15 to Montana and over across I94/I90 to go home.

I think I want to be somewhere in western MT (mountains a must) but I don't know many areas. I liked Bozeman a lot. I honestly didn't like Missoula. I thought it was kind of dumpy? Where all do you guys live. How do you like it? What do you do for a living? I'm just a little curious as to how job opportunities are out there. I have worked in the IT field but got sick of it... and more recently have worked for FedEx as a courier. I would do IT temporarily but it's not really something I enjoy.

(What I REALLY want to do is buy some land, build a little log cabin and get myself a siberian husky or an alaskan malamute or two and my bring big dodge truck and just enjoy everything!)

thanks in advance.

njoverkill,

My brother lives in Billings and loves it....lots of fishing and hunting and outdoor stuff to do, quiet and safe communities, picturesque beauty and TONS of other advantages.

There are lots of people in Montana that wouldnt live anywhere else.

induchman,

I was driving up I25 in Wyoming going towards Cheyenne and an a LOADED 18 wheeler blew over along with like 5 others. insane. When I got out to help the guy out I almost fell over! They said about 75MPH winds on the radio.

http://www.cdevco.net/usa_trip/ pics of blown over and otherwise messed up trucks.

Woooooo- looks like Hoss might hafta break out the long johns

njoverkill-
Don't let the naysayer's bring you down. There are good paying jobs here- you just hafta be skilled or edjumacated to get one. No different than anywhere else I've been. Summers are great- winters are cold. We actually have 4 seasons and yes- the temperature has changed 100 degrees in 24 hours- Gotta love a chinook
If you would like some numbers or other details- drop me a p.m and I can fill you in. By the way our lil storm has dropped a foot of snow up where I work so far. I gotta throw my studded knobbies on the Yz and go ice racin' 8)

Njoverkill: Yep, them winds can ruin your day on 25. Not so bad on 90 tho. Wyoming is much more windy than Montana in many places, yet Great Falls is the WINDIEST place.

It was just a warning to the overzealous out there that think they can live in the mountains like they live back East.

Natives out West don't care how you did it back home. If you insist on changing the way things are, you'll be shown the door and told to go back where you came from. It's happened to several people I knew in MT & WY. I get along with just about everyone, including the natives.

In Wyoming we had two sayings, among many others: A BIG town is one where the population exceeds it's elevation. If the number of pawn shops exceeds the number of gas stations, better move on. Such is the case in Flathead Cty.

BIG towns like Billings can absorb more Easterners/flatlanders than say Missoula or Bozeman. If you're like minded (Ted Turner) then you'd love Bozeman or Livingston. Dillon, Polson, Ronan, Lakeside or Swan Valley may not agree with you.

The coldest that I ever felt in my life was in Lovell or Lovick (something like that) Wyoming. Was trying to load and tarp a flatbed trailer. Load was insulation board which is really cardboard with Wyoming mud sandwiched. So I am out there with a load at max hight, temp -10, wind 50 mph. I never did get the tarp on it after a couple hours of trying, and had to go into town to a closed gas station and did it there. I have been comfortable at a lot lower temps but that was the most uncomfortable that I have ever been. I thought I might die and the more I thought about it, didn't sound too bad. What made me feel so bad... the natives ( of the area ) were out there working with light jackets on, just another day

Haulin': That would be GP Gypsum in Lovell, the Rose City. Gotta have something to keep those Mormon kids busy. We had Celotex in Cody.

10 is a warm winter day. When the sun was out, the snow just disappears. We used to BBQ every day, even when it got colder. Chinook winds come blasting & howling down the mountains sometimes up to 90-100mph and in a couple of hours the temps jump to 50F. Been there, done that, moved on.
