Interesting "car" concept goes production in India

I just stumbled along this article:

http://trak.in/tags/business/2008/07...r-car-minicat/

Driving for approximately 1 cent per mile in an urban environment. Naturally the question that remains is how the electricity is going to be produced.

I had seen that on TV along with some Chinese cars. If I remember, they were not letting them into the US because they wouldnt pass our safety/crash tests.

It would be neat to see one of them in the offset barrier test.
...tubular chassis that is glued not welded and a body of fiberglass...
I bet you'd see flying dummies after the car exploded on impact.

Don't get me wrong, I think if folks are willing to take the risk they ought to be allowed to drive them. We can ride motorcycles (even without a helmet in my state) so what's the difference? A car like that is surely not a danger to anyone but the occupants.

I know the answer, but that's outside the scope of the discussions we like to have on DTR so I will now.

That looks like it could be very popular. A mid sized Diesel pickup is a very good idea and way overdue. Too bad Dodge doesn't have a diesel Dakota.

Mahindra is very big and makes good equipment, but it's strange that India has to lead the way on vehicle design.

Raspy,
Expect a Cummins V6 in the Dakota either next year or 2010.

That's good news. Small pickups are very useful, those would make great auto parts delivery trucks.

I totally agree. I think the same rules should apply to those cars as MC's (one person max, helmet if required). They get better mileage than a lot of bikes!

I think the little pickup looks pretty cool. Hopefully the quality is there. Usually when new carmakers come here their initial cars are cheap but total junk. Yugo and the first Hyundais for example...
