Ignition / Detonation Advice?
Ignition / Detonation Advice?
I was filling up my truck today at the gas station and the guy in the next stall commented that my truck sounded like it had a spark knock. He suggested that I might want to try a higher octane fuel. So, I shut the pump off and switched to 91 octane (good thing he caught me, I only had put about 5 gallons of the other stuff in). He also said I might want to check my plugs and make sure that they're ok. I went down to my local auto parts store and they suggested running a set of NGKs with a low heat number. The guy at the counter said I may want to check my timing too and sold me a really nice timing light. The truck is running better with the 91 octane but it still has an obvious spark knock. What should I set the timing at and can somebody point me to a reference for changing plugs? I need torque specs and locations too. Also, any tips and tricks would be appreciated.
Oh, truck is a 97 Dodge w/Cummins. Thanks.

i had a guy tell me it looked like my truck was burning oil cause it smoked when i pulled away from a stopsign. so i asked him to go back by the pipe and check again. ooops, my foot slipped on the throttle pedal. sorry about that cloud buddy, cough cough cough. poor fella. teach the un-informed the hard way.
I'm only as think as you drunk I am... or something like that.
I've been out here all morning trying to get this thing timed. I think the guy at the auto parts store sold me a bad timing light. It's inductive and I've hooked it every where I can find and can't get it to work. I'm going back to get another one...
I pulled the plugs too, they all looked wet and only seem to have an electrode left on them. They were pretty wore down, I've never seen a set wore till the tip was sharp and even had holes in it. I'm surprised the thing was running. Trouble is the plugs the auto parts guy sold me won't thread into the holes. Looks like I may have to tap the head if I can't find the right ones.
